Veteran Striker Sunil Chhetri Spearheads Understrength Indian Squad for Hangzhou Asian Games
Despite reluctance from clubs to release players due to ISL clashes, AIFF announces an understrength team led by Sunil Chhetri for the Hangzhou Asian games. Uncertainty looms over head coach Igor Stimac's participation.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has announced an 18-member Indian squad for the Hangzhou Asian Games. The announcement comes after a period of uncertainty and difficulty in assembling a second-rung team, primarily due to scheduling conflicts with the Indian Super League (ISL). Veteran striker Sunil Chhetri is the only notable face among the selected players. However, there remains significant doubt over whether head coach Igor Stimac will accompany this under-strength team to Hangzhou.
Clash with ISL Schedule

Most clubs were unwilling to release their players named in the original squad as the Asian Games football competition schedule clashes directly with that of ISL, which kicks off on September 21. This reluctance from clubs resulted in AIFF having to assemble a considerably weaker team than initially planned.
A Blow for AIFF President
This situation could be seen as a considerable setback for AIFF president and BJP leader Kalyan Chaubey who had been engaged in intense discussions with ministry officials to ensure participation of an Indian team at these games. Despite failing to meet government criteria necessary for competing at this quadrennial event, Chaubey was determined to have representation from India.
An Under-Strength Team Announced
After protracted negotiations, AIFF managed to announce an under-strength squad comprising nine players from the initial list of 22 including Chhetri; while filling up remaining spots with relatively inexperienced players from various clubs. It's clear that this isn't an ideal scenario but given circumstances it was deemed necessary.
Doubts Over Head Coach’s Presence
While it's confirmed that Chhetri would lead this makeshift squad, there are still doubts regarding whether head coach Igor Stimac will travel along with them. Despite previously stating that the Asian Games was a priority, Stimac might reconsider his decision considering the lack of strength and experience in the current team.
In conclusion, while AIFF's efforts to ensure India's participation at Hangzhou Asian Games are commendable, it is evident that this has not been an ideal preparation. The last-minute formation of an under-strength team and uncertainty over the head coach’s presence add layers of difficulty to their campaign. However, these challenges also present an opportunity for lesser-known players to step up and make a mark on international stage. It remains to be seen how this hastily assembled squad will fare in Hangzhou.
