Success Has Many Fathers, Failure Is Orphan: Ashwini Ponnappa Hits Back At Prakash Padukone
Veteran doubles shuttler Ashwini Ponnappa has responded robustly to Prakash Padukone's blunt remarks on the Indian badminton team's lacklustre performance at the Paris Olympics 2024. In a strongly-worded Instagram post, Ashwini criticised the tendency to blame players solely for losses while coaches escape accountability.
"Disappointing to see this. If a player wins, everyone jumps on the bandwagon to take credit and if they lose it's just the players' fault?! Why aren't coaches held responsible for lack of preparation and getting the player ready??" Ashwini said in her post.

Paris Olympics Badminton Performance
India's badminton contingent returned from the Paris Olympics without a medal for the first time since 2008. Seven players, including two doubles pairs, represented India at the Games. Lakshya Sen was the only male player to reach the medal round, but he lost the men's singles bronze medal match to Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia.
Prakash Padukone, a former All England champion, had urged players to take more responsibility and repay the faith shown by coaches, sporting bodies, and the government. His comments came after his 22-year-old ward Lakshya Sen's defeat in the bronze medal match.
Ashwini Ponnappa's Critique
Ashwini Ponnappa did not hold back in her response. She argued that winning and losing should be seen as a team effort. "They are the first ones to take credit for wins; why not take responsibility for their players' losses as well?! At the end of the day, winning takes a team effort and losing is also the team's responsibility," she added.
Much-fancied PV Sindhu and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty were among those who crashed out early in their respective events. Sindhu exited in the Round of 16, while Rankireddy/Shetty were knocked out in the quarterfinals.

Ashwini's comments highlight a broader issue within sports where coaches often receive praise when athletes succeed but face little scrutiny when they fail. This imbalance can affect team morale and individual performances.
The debate sparked by these comments underscores the need for a more balanced approach to evaluating both players' and coaches' roles in sports outcomes. It also calls for greater accountability across all levels of coaching and support staff.
The Indian badminton community will likely continue discussing these issues as they prepare for future competitions. The focus will be on ensuring that both players and coaches work together more effectively to achieve better results on international stages like the Olympics.
