Shami to Play Domestic Cricket for Fitness Test Before International Return

India pacer Mohammed Shami is focused on achieving full fitness following his ankle surgery. He is open to playing domestic cricket to ensure he is in top shape before making an international comeback. Shami, who last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, has been recovering from surgery earlier this year.

Shami Eyes Domestic Cricket for Fitness

Speaking at the Cricket Association of Bengal's (CAB) annual awards ceremony, Shami shared his commitment to returning only when he is completely fit. "I am working hard to make a comeback soon because I know I have been out of action for quite some time. However, I want to ensure there is no discomfort when I return," Shami told reporters.

Shami's Domestic Cricket Plans

Shami hinted at the possibility of playing domestic matches before his international return. "If I need to play domestic cricket to test my fitness, I will. What matters most is that I am fully ready for whatever comes next, regardless of the opposition or format," he added.

Reports suggest that Shami might play for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, potentially participating in one or two of Bengal's opening matches against Uttar Pradesh on October 11 and Bihar on October 18. This would help him gauge his readiness for competitive cricket.

Preparation for Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Shami is expected to be a key player in India's preparations for the upcoming five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. When asked about the series, Shami confidently stated, "We are the favourites, they should be worried."

The CAB also honoured Shami for his long association with Bengal cricket despite being born in Uttar Pradesh. "I often say I was born in UP but made in Bengal. This is a journey of over 20 years, and I am grateful for the love and support Bengal has shown me," Shami said during the ceremony.

CAB Annual Awards Ceremony

The CAB's annual awards ceremony saw several Bengal cricketers being recognised for their achievements. Anustup Majumdar received the Cricketer of the Year award, while Abishek Porel was named Gentleman Cricketer of the Year. Suraj Singh Jaiswal was awarded Best Fast Bowler of the Year, and Chandrahas Dash received Best Under-19 Cricketer award.

Among women cricketers, Deepti Sharma and Saika Ishaque were felicitated for their outstanding performances in the Senior Women's T20 and One-Day tournaments. A total of 200 awards were distributed during the event.

The awardees included:

  • Cricketer of the Year: Anustup Majumdar
  • Gentleman Cricketer of the Year: Abishek Porel
  • Best Fast Bowler of the Year: Suraj Singh Jaiswal
  • Best Under-19 Cricketer of the Year: Chandrahas Dash
  • Highest Run Getter Senior Women's T20: Deepti Sharma
  • Highest Wicket Taker Senior Women's One-Day: Mita Paul
  • Highest Wicket Taker Senior Women's T20: Saika Ishaque

Shami emphasised that he does not want to rush his recovery and risk another injury. "The stronger I return, the better it is for me. I don't want to rush and risk getting injured again, be it against Bangladesh, New Zealand or the Australia series," he said. He has already started bowling but will not take any chances until he is 100% fit.

The ceremony also highlighted other notable performances by Bengal cricketers over the past year. This recognition underscores their contributions and achievements in various formats of the game.

Mohammed Shami's dedication to ensuring full fitness before returning to international cricket reflects his commitment to both personal health and team success. His potential participation in domestic matches will be closely watched as he prepares for future challenges.
