Reetika Hooda's Promising Run Ends in Paris Olympics Quarterfinals
Indian wrestler Reetika Hooda exited the Paris Olympics after a narrow quarterfinal loss to top seed Aiperi Medet Kyzy in the women's 76kg event. Reetika's defeat marked the end of India's campaign at the Games, with the country securing six medals, one less than its tally at the Tokyo edition.

In her quarterfinal match, Reetika faced the Asian Games champion and World Championship silver medallist. She managed to keep her opponent to standing wrestling but lost on criteria after a 1-1 draw. The rule states that if both wrestlers have the same score, the one who scores last wins.
Repechage Route Closed
Reetika's chance for a repechage was thwarted by American Kennedy Blades, who defeated Aiperi 8-6 in a gruelling semifinal. Earlier in the day, Reetika showcased her prowess by defeating Hungary's Bernadett Nagy in just 29 seconds, winning 12-2 by technical superiority.
This was India's first entry in the women's 76kg division at the Olympics. The 21-year-old Reetika had previously become India's female U23 world champion last year. Her coach, Virender Dahiya, expressed frustration over her defensive strategy. "You can't win bouts by just defence," he said. "Yes, she fought well but what's the point if your strong defence does not get you win."
Strong Defence but No Attack
Reetika's match against Aiperi saw her using immense upper body strength to fend off a double leg attack from her opponent. Despite her strong defence, she failed to launch an effective attack. "Reetika did not let her attack but she herself did not attack," Dahiya added. "You lose by one point or 10 points; you lose."
During the bout, Reetika earned the first point due to Aiperi's passivity but lost it when she was put on the clock for lack of attacking moves. Aiperi managed to grab Reetika's right leg but Reetika escaped her grip. After equalising, Aiperi used her experience to defend successfully, keeping Reetika in a head-lock position.
Other Indian Wrestlers' Performances
Other Indian wrestlers also faced challenges at the Olympics. Antim Panghal (50kg), Anshu Malik (57kg), and Nisha Dahiya (68kg) exited earlier in their respective categories. Meanwhile, Vinesh Phogat awaits a verdict on her appeal against disqualification from the women's 50kg final for being overweight by 100 grams. The decision is expected on August 13.
Aman Sehrawat brought some cheer by winning a bronze medal in the men's 57kg weight class on Friday. This achievement added to India's overall medal tally at the Games.
Reetika's performance highlighted both her potential and areas needing improvement. With more experience against senior wrestlers, she could achieve greater success in future competitions.
