Sreejesh Commends Vinesh Phogat's Courage and Culture Amid Olympic Trial

Indian hockey star PR Sreejesh praised Vinesh Phogat's resilience, noting her courage despite adversity. He mentioned that the wrestler was laughing when they met on Saturday, even though she was debarred from the women's 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics for being 100gm over the limit.

Sreejesh Praises Phogats Olympic Spirit

Phogat's appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) for a joint silver medal is still pending. Sreejesh commented, "She was laughing when I met her at the village, but I know that she was hiding that feeling with that smile. It's quite hard for any sportsperson." He shared these thoughts during the hockey team's felicitation at India House after retaining their Tokyo Olympics bronze medal.

Vinesh Phogat's Appeal and Mental Strength

The CAS ad-hoc division will take more time to deliberate on Phogat's appeal, with a decision expected on August 13. Sreejesh expressed his support, saying, "It's a mental trauma, but I hope she will manage it. She is an example for everybody in our country, not just in wrestling but in any sport."

Sreejesh highlighted Phogat's sportsmanship and determination, stating, "In spite of everything that happened to her, the way she fought back and showed sportsmanship is a big thing -- the way she came back, fought back, and reached the final. It was shocking news for all of us. It was terrible news."

Support from Fellow Athletes

Sreejesh emphasised that regardless of the outcome, Phogat has already won the hearts of many. "Win or lose, you are a star. You have done your job to showcase to the world what calibre you have, what culture you come from, and how tough you are," he said.

He added that Phogat's journey is a testament to her hard work and dedication. "It's the hard work of an athlete's entire life to win a medal for their country. It's a tough situation, but I believe that she's a fighter," Sreejesh remarked.

Sreejesh concluded by expressing his hopes for a positive outcome from CAS so that India could celebrate another silver medal. "We are together, and I will pray for her positive result so that we get another silver," he stated.

Phogat's story serves as an inspiration to many athletes in India and beyond. Her ability to maintain composure and fight back in challenging circumstances highlights her strength and determination.
