Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony Ushers in Final Chapter of Paris' Sport Summer

Paris has transitioned from hosting the Olympics to welcoming the Paralympic Games, with French President Emmanuel Macron officially opening the event. The ceremony took place outside a stadium, similar to the Olympic opening on July 26. Thousands of athletes paraded down Champs-Elysées to Place de la Concorde, where about 50,000 spectators watched from stands around the iconic square.

The ceremony featured fighter planes flying overhead, leaving trails in the colours of the French flag. Delegations entered the square alphabetically, with some large groups like Brazil's 250 athletes and smaller ones like Barbados' few participants. Accessibility was ensured with asphalt strips laid along the avenue for athletes in wheelchairs.

The event started at 8 pm local time, but fans had gathered hours earlier under a hot sun to secure good spots. Performers entertained the crowd, and volunteers danced with Paralympians waving their national flags. The French delegation received loud cheers and sang along to popular songs like "Que Je T'aime" by Johnny Hallyday.

Celebrations and Performances

French singer Lucky Love, who was born without his left arm, performed on stage with wheelchair-bound artists. As the national anthem played, the Obelisk lit up in French flag colours. Organisers had promised a spectacular show, held entirely on land unlike the Olympic ceremony which featured a boat parade on the Seine River.

More than 4,000 athletes with various impairments will compete in 22 sports until September 8. The first medals will be awarded in taekwondo, table tennis, swimming, and track cycling. Athletes are grouped by impairment levels to ensure fair competition. Only goalball and boccia lack Olympic equivalents.

High Expectations for Athletes

International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons noted that large crowds in Paris would significantly impact athletes who competed in empty stands during Tokyo's COVID-19 restrictions. Parsons expressed hope that the Paralympics would act as a positive force amid global tensions.

Tony Estanguet, president of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, praised Paralympians as "immense champions." The closing ceremony is scheduled for Stade de France, the national stadium. Organisers reported that over 2 million of the 2.8 million tickets for various events have been sold.

Ukraine's delegation received loud applause from spectators. The event's atmosphere was vibrant as performers entertained and volunteers danced alongside athletes. The sky turned orange as night fell, adding to the picturesque setting of the ceremony.

The Paralympic Games promise to be a significant event for both athletes and spectators alike. With numerous sports and a large number of participants, it is set to be an exciting period for all involved.
