Pakistan Salvages Pride with Win Over Ireland in T20 World Cup Finale
Former champions Pakistan concluded their T20 World Cup campaign with a narrow three-wicket victory against Ireland on Sunday. Despite being out of contention for the title after losses to India and the USA, Pakistan managed to restrict Ireland to 106 for 9, thanks to Shaheen Shah Afridi's impressive 3/22. The chase, however, highlighted Pakistan's batting vulnerabilities as they stumbled to 62 for six before captain Babar Azam (32 not out) and Abbas Afridi (17) steadied the ship, guiding Pakistan to 111 for 7 in 18.5 overs.

The match was a display of resilience from both sides. Ireland's bowlers, particularly Barry McCarthy (3/15), Curtis Campher (2/24), and Mark Adair (1/24), bowled with determination but couldn't prevent Pakistan from crossing the finish line. For Pakistan, the opening batsman Saim Ayub showed promise early on, hitting a six and two fours before being dismissed. Mohammad Rizwan also contributed with three fours but was sent back by McCarthy at a crucial juncture.
Ireland's innings got off to a rocky start as they lost their top order within the first three overs, leaving them reeling at 4 for three. Afridi's lethal bowling removed Andrew Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker, while Mohammad Amir caught Paul Stirling behind the stumps. Despite these early setbacks, Harry Tector and George Dockrell attempted to rebuild the innings, but consistent breakthroughs from Pakistan's bowlers kept the pressure on Ireland.
Gareth Delany provided some resistance with his aggressive batting, including the first six of Ireland's innings. His partnership with Joshua Little added valuable runs, but it wasn't enough to set a challenging target. Delany's dismissal by Imad Wasim marked a turning point, ending a 44-run stand that had given Ireland some hope.
In the end, Shaheen Afridi's two sixes sealed the win for Pakistan, ensuring they ended their World Cup journey on a positive note. Despite the victory, Pakistan's performance in this tournament has been a mixed bag, with their batting frailties exposed in crucial moments. Ireland, on the other hand, will rue missed opportunities but can take solace from their spirited performances against top-tier teams.
