Pakistan Secures Consolation Victory Over Ireland in T20 World Cup Clash
In a recent T20 World Cup encounter, former champions Pakistan secured a victory against Ireland by three wickets in a match that held no significance for the tournament's progression. The clash, which took place on Sunday, saw both teams already out of the competition, with India and the USA moving forward from Group A.

The match was highlighted by Pakistan's left-arm pacers, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Amir, who played pivotal roles in limiting Ireland's total. Afridi, delivering a standout performance, claimed three wickets for 22 runs. Amir complemented well by taking two wickets for just 11 runs. Their efforts were instrumental in confining Ireland to a modest score of 106 for nine.
Imad Wasim's exceptional bowling figures of 3/8 and Haris Rauf's contribution of 1/17 further tightened the screws on Ireland. Despite the challenging conditions on a damp pitch, Pakistan's decision to bowl first paid off.
Ireland's innings saw Gareth Delany and Mark Adair putting up a fight with a 32-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Delany's quickfire 31 off 19 balls was the highlight of Ireland's batting effort.
The chase, however, was not smooth sailing for Pakistan as they found themselves in a precarious position at 57 for 5 in just 9.3 overs. It was the calm and composed batting from skipper Babar Azam, who remained unbeaten at 32, and Abbas Afridi's crucial 17 runs that steered Pakistan to victory.
Barry McCarthy emerged as the standout bowler for Ireland with impressive figures of 3/15, but his efforts were not enough to defend their total.
| Team | Score | Top Performer |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland | 106 for 9 in 20 overs | Gareth Delany - 31 runs; Shaheen Shah Afridi - 3/22 |
| Pakistan | 111 for 7 in 18.5 overs | Babar Azam - 32 not out; Barry McCarthy - 3/15 |
This match may have been inconsequential in terms of the tournament's outcome, but it provided both teams an opportunity to showcase their talents and end their campaign on a high note. For Pakistan, it was a chance to fine-tune their strategies and give their players exposure under tournament conditions. Ireland, despite the loss, demonstrated resilience and the ability to challenge formidable opponents.
The T20 World Cup continues to be a platform where cricketing nations come together to display their prowess, spirit, and passion for the game. As teams bow out, the competition intensifies with remaining teams vying for the coveted title.
