OJ Simpson Cremated in Private Ceremony, Estate Attorney Confirms

Former NFL star and controversial figure O.J. Simpson was cremated in a private ceremony at Palm Mortuary in downtown Las Vegas, as confirmed by his estate's attorney, Malcolm LaVergne. The event took place on Wednesday, following Simpson's death at his Las Vegas home at the age of 76. LaVergne, who is overseeing Simpson's trust and estate matters in Nevada state court, was present at the cremation alongside other unspecified attendees.

OJ Simpson Cremated Privately

Simpson, who passed away on April 10 after a battle with prostate cancer diagnosed last year, left his cremains to his children. According to LaVergne, there are no plans for a public memorial service. Simpson's children from his first marriage—Arnelle, 55, and Jason, 53—as well as Sydney, 38, and Justin, 35, from his marriage to Nicole Brown Simpson, are the sole beneficiaries of his estate.

The attorney shared insights into Simpson's final days, noting that he was "awake, alert and chilling" just before Easter. However, Simpson's condition rapidly declined, leading to his passing last week. A family statement on X (formerly Twitter) requested privacy following his death.

LaVergne is currently assessing the value of Simpson's assets. Despite Simpson's fame as an NFL running back, actor, and broadcaster, he did not own a home in any of the states where he lived, including Nevada, California, and Florida. Simpson was famously acquitted of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1994 but was found liable in a civil court in 1997 and ordered to pay $33.5 million in compensation—a sum largely unpaid at the time of his death.

In addition to his legal battles related to the murder case, Simpson served nine years in prison for armed robbery following a 2007 incident in Las Vegas. He was released in October 2017 and had since been living a low-profile life in Las Vegas.

Attorney David Cook, representing the Goldman family, estimates that the unpaid civil judgment against Simpson now exceeds $114 million due to interest. LaVergne believes the amount could be more than $200 million but asserts that Simpson's assets will not cover this sum. He plans to share his findings with representatives of the Goldman and Brown families but noted they would need to pursue any additional assets independently.
