BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla Refutes Claims of Rift Between Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma

BCCI vice-President Rajeev Shukla has dismissed rumours of discord between India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma. He also expressed support for Rohit, who is currently experiencing a significant dip in form. India suffered a 1-3 defeat against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with Rohit scoring only 31 runs throughout the series. This led to his decision to exclude himself from the final Test in Sydney.

BCCI Denies Rift Between Gambhir and Sharma

Speculation arose about potential conflicts between Rohit and Gambhir, alongside concerns about dressing room tensions due to poor performances by senior players, including Virat Kohli. Shukla firmly denied these claims, stating, "Its completely wrong statement, there is no rift between chairman of selection Ajit Agarkar and coach, there is no rift between captain and coach. This is all rubbish which is being spread in a section of media."

Team Dynamics and Performance

Rumours suggested that Gambhir had issued a warning to senior players to improve their performance or face exclusion. Shukla refuted this, clarifying that Rohit has not demanded the captaincy. "He is the captain. Form or lack of form is part and parcel of the game," he stated. He emphasised that Rohit's decision to step down from the fifth Test was due to his awareness of his form.

The recent review meeting aimed at evaluating the team's performance has concluded, according to Shukla. He mentioned that they have discussed strategies for improvement. "Review meeting is complete. We have discussed the way forward and how to do well," he added.

Upcoming Squad Announcement

The Indian squad for the Champions Trophy will be announced soon, as per Shukla's statement. The selectors are delaying the announcement to assess the fitness of pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who sustained a back injury during the Australia tour. "Squad for Champions Trophy will be known after a meeting on January 18 or 19," Shukla confirmed.

Shukla's comments aim to quell any speculation about internal team issues and focus on future strategies for success. The emphasis remains on addressing performance challenges while awaiting key player fitness updates before finalising the team lineup for upcoming tournaments.
