Olympic Heartbreak for Boxer Nishant Dev in Quarterfinal Defeat

Nishant Dev's first Olympic journey ended in disappointment after a close split decision loss to Mexico's Marco Verde Alvarez in the men's 71kg quarterfinal on Saturday. Despite leading after the initial round, the 23-year-old Indian, who is a world championship bronze medallist, was defeated 1-4 by his second-seeded opponent at the North Paris Arena.

Nishant Devs Olympic Dream Ends

Alvarez acknowledged the difficulty of the match. "It was a tough bout, played with heart and mind. I hit on his body to open up for upper cuts. I had lost to him in 2021 World Championships. I have a lot of respect for him," Alvarez said. "He is a very technically sound boxer. My coaches asked me to play smart after I lost the first round."

Initial Lead and Strategy

Nishant started strong as Alvarez struggled to keep up with his speed. Using straight jabs effectively, Nishant landed several hits on Alvarez's face and body, tiring his opponent. Although Alvarez managed to connect a right hook that forced the referee to give Nishant a standing count, Nishant's dominant performance ensured he led after the first round.

In their previous encounter at the 2021 World Championships, Nishant had defeated Alvarez. This time, however, despite Nishant's aggressive start and effective jabs, Alvarez managed to turn the tables in the later rounds.

Mid-Round Dynamics

As the match progressed, Nishant continued to deliver a variety of punches, including hooks, while Alvarez also improved his game by landing some crucial blows. Despite looking stronger and picking off Alvarez's shots effectively, Nishant couldn't maintain his lead as the judges favoured Alvarez 3-2 going into the final three minutes.

The final round saw Alvarez starting aggressively with a combination of punches and an uppercut. In contrast, Nishant appeared exhausted and struggled to keep up with Alvarez's pace, resulting in slower punches.

Final Moments and Verdict

In the closing moments of the bout, Alvarez showed more urgency and aggression. He landed several significant punches while Nishant seemed fatigued and unable to respond effectively. This shift in momentum ultimately led to Alvarez securing a narrow victory.

Nishant is now the fifth Indian boxer to exit from these Olympic Games. The only Indian boxer still in contention is Tokyo Olympics bronze winner Lovlina Borgohain.

The match was closely contested with both boxers showing skill and determination. However, it was Alvarez who managed to edge out Nishant in a hard-fought battle.
