New Delhi Set to Host the 2025 Para Athletics World Championships in Historic First for India
India is set to host the Para Athletics World Championships for the first time in 2025, as announced by the World Para Athletics (WPA). The event will take place from September 26 to October 5 at New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. This venue will also host the World Para Athletics Grand Prix from March 11-13. This marks the 12th edition of the championships and the fourth time it will be held in Asia.

The event is expected to attract over 1,000 athletes from more than 100 countries. It serves as a significant precursor to the Los Angeles Paralympic Games in 2028. Paul Fitzgerald, head of World Para Athletics, stated, "The 2025 Para Athletics World Championships will be the largest international Para sport event ever to take place in India, representing a massive opportunity to grow our sport, our fan base, and to impact society’s perception of persons with disabilities in the world’s most populous nation."
India's Progress in Para Athletics
India has shown remarkable progress in Para athletics, securing 17 medals, including six golds, at the 2023 World Championships in Kobe. This success highlights the efforts of the National Paralympic Committee of India and investments made in sports, particularly Para athletics. Hosting such major events can significantly enhance visibility and accessibility for Para sports.
The National Paralympic Committee of India emphasised that hosting this event is crucial for advancing the Paralympic movement within the country. They stated that this prestigious championship will not only elevate India's global sports standing but also play a pivotal role in accelerating the Paralympic movement domestically.
Impact on Inclusivity and Future Bids
With over 60 million people with disabilities in India, this event is vital for promoting inclusivity and empowering athletes with disabilities. It provides an opportunity to showcase India's growth in Para sports. The event is also expected to bolster India's bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe has already shown interest in India's anticipated bid for the 2029 World Championships. This aligns with India's broader strategy to host the 2036 Olympics. The Athletics Federation of India is expected to formally express interest when the bidding process opens.
The hosting of these championships represents a significant step forward for India in both inclusivity and international sporting ambitions. It underscores India's commitment to fostering opportunities for athletes with disabilities while positioning itself as a key player on the global sports stage.
