Neeraj Chopra Achieves Season's Best to Finish Second in Lausanne Diamond League

Neeraj Chopra, India's star javelin thrower, secured second place at the Lausanne Diamond League with a season-best throw of 89.49m on his final attempt. The 26-year-old was in fourth place until the fourth round but improved to 85.58m in his fifth attempt. His last throw surpassed his performance at the Paris Olympics.

Chopras Season Best Secures Second Place

Chopra's fifth-round effort of 85.58m ensured he made it to the final round, where only the top three competitors get their last attempts. Anderson Peters from Grenada, a two-time world champion and Paris Olympics bronze medallist, won the event with a massive second-round throw of 90.61m. Julian Weber from Germany took third place with an 87.08m throw.

Diamond League Standings

With seven points from his second-place finish on Thursday, Chopra is now joint third with Weber in the Diamond League standings, both having 15 points. Peters leads with 21 points, while Jakub Vadlejch from the Czech Republic, who finished seventh with a throw of 82.03m on Thursday, is in second place with 16 points.

Chopra confirmed his participation in the Lausanne Diamond League meeting on Saturday and will decide on possible surgery after the season ends. He was the Diamond League champion in 2022 and finished second behind Vadlejch in last year's DL final in Eugene, USA.

Upcoming Events

This season's DL finals are scheduled for September 14 in Brussels. To qualify for the season finale, Chopra needs to finish in the top six of the Diamond League meetings series standings. Another DL meeting featuring men's javelin throw is set for September 5 in Zurich.

Chopra had previously won the Lausanne leg of the Diamond League in both 2022 and 2023 but did not achieve victory this time. He also finished second behind Vadlejch in Doha on May 10 this year.

Despite nursing a long-standing groin injury, Chopra claimed a silver medal at the Paris Olympics on August 8 with an 89.45m throw. He had won a historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago. Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem had beaten Chopra for gold in Paris with an Olympic record throw of 92.97m.

Peters led the competition from start to finish and showcased his skill with a 90m-plus throw in the last round. He has a personal best of 93.07m, achieved in 2022.

Chopra has been managing his groin injury since winning gold at the Budapest World Championships last year.

The upcoming events will be crucial for Chopra as he aims to secure his spot in the DL finals and continue his impressive performances despite his injury challenges.
