Neeraj Chopra And Bengaluru Make Inaugural NC Classic An Unforgettable Chapter In Indian Athletics

Bengaluru, July 5: A cool, overcast evening at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium set the perfect stage for a historic moment in Indian athletics. At the heart of it stood Neeraj Chopra - Olympic champion, world champion, and now, a host and winner of his own elite international competition.

The inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic (NC Classic) wasn't just about medals or distances. It was a statement that India is more than capable of hosting world-class athletics events and that the country's biggest track and field star is ready to lead from the front, both on and off the field.

Chopra, 27, threw 86.18m in the third round to clinch his third title within a month, following his wins in the Paris Diamond League and the Golden Spike in Ostrava.

Despite challenging headwinds, he bested Kenya's world champion Julius Yego (84.51m) and Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage (84.34m). But it wasn't just about the competition - this was Chopra fulfilling a personal dream: hosting a world-class athletics event in front of home fans, with his family, friends, and thousands of passionate spectators cheering him on.

A Celebration of Athletic Spirit

While the stadium wasn't at full capacity, the noise and emotion more than made up for it. The crowd roared with every throw. With Chopra's parents, uncle, and relatives watching from the stands - some of whom had travelled all the way from Haryana - the atmosphere was electric. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was also present in the VVIP enclosure, underscoring the event's significance.

Before the competition began, Neeraj took time to felicitate his coach and javelin legend Jan Železný, the current world record holder (98.48m).

Local rapper Dhanda Nyoliwala fired up the crowd with his Haryana hip-hop set before Chopra walked out to a deafening roar. Once the competition ended, Neeraj didn't just wave to the crowd - he walked around the stadium, shaking hands with fans, giving them a memory for life. It was pure Chopra: competitive fire mixed with humility and deep gratitude.

A Dream Project Comes Alive

Originally slated for Panchkula, the NC Classic had to be shifted to Bengaluru due to inadequate lighting at the previous venue - a move that ultimately added to its charm. Bengaluru's sporting culture and infrastructure embraced the event wholeheartedly. Despite the last-minute relocation and weather disruptions, the competition went off smoothly.

The NC Classic is more than a one-off event. It's the first single-athlete-named World Athletics Category A competition in India, placing it in the league of Mondo Classic (hosted by Armand Duplantis in Sweden) and Kip Keino Classic (hosted in Kenya by the legendary distance runner). Chopra, inspired by these giants, now joins their ranks - an athlete giving back to the sport by creating a platform for others.

In his post-event press conference, Chopra admitted the windy conditions had affected performance. "Of course, I wanted to win, but the goal was also to successfully host this event. It's been smooth, and I'm thankful," he said. He also acknowledged the mental pressure of performing at home, especially after competing in two high-level meets abroad in recent weeks.

A Vision for the Future

The success of the NC Classic offers a compelling roadmap for Indian athletics. With support from state and national federations, corporate backers, and fans, such events can become fixtures on the international calendar - drawing global talent, inspiring the next generation, and providing homegrown stars a world-class platform on home soil.

For Neeraj Chopra, the evening was about more than medals. It was about planting the seeds of a long-term sporting legacy, giving young athletes a glimpse of what is possible, and proving that India can dream big in athletics - and deliver.

Laying A Foundation for the Future

As the floodlights dimmed and the echoes of cheers faded into the Bengaluru night, one thing was clear - the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 wasn't just a competition, it was a milestone.

It brought together top athletes, loyal fans, and a sporting hero determined to elevate Indian athletics to new heights. With its resounding success, the foundation has been laid for something far bigger - a future where India regularly hosts elite athletics events, produces champions across disciplines, and celebrates sport with the same fervour as cricket.
