Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz Bow Out of Olympics After Doubles Defeat

Rafael Nadal's journey at the Paris Games, and likely his Olympic career, concluded on Wednesday night. He and Carlos Alcaraz were defeated in the men's doubles quarterfinals by the American pair Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram with a score of 6-2, 6-4.

Nadal, Alcarazs Olympic Exit

The match took place at Court Philippe Chatrier, where Nadal has previously secured 14 French Open titles, contributing to his 22 Grand Slam victories. The crowd was enthusiastic, cheering mainly for Nadal as he and Alcaraz tried to avoid defeat in the final game.

End of an Era

Nadal, now 38, has not disclosed any plans regarding his future or retirement. Given his age and recent injuries, participating in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics seems unlikely. His future in competitive tennis beyond the Paris Games remains uncertain.

Nadal has previously won gold medals for Spain in singles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and in doubles at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. However, he lost to Novak Djokovic in singles earlier this week.

Decisive Moments

The outcome of the doubles match seemed sealed when Ram hit a return winner off Alcaraz's serve to break him at love, leading 4-3 in the second set. The Spaniards argued that the ball was out, but French chair umpire Morgane Lara upheld the call.

Despite this setback, Nadal and Alcaraz earned a break point as Krajicek served for victory. However, they couldn't capitalise on it. After the match ended, both pairs hugged at the net before Nadal collected his gear and waved to the supportive crowd.

First-Time Partners

This event marked the first time Nadal and Alcaraz played doubles together. Despite their combined 26 Grand Slam singles titles—Alcaraz with four from this year's French Open and Wimbledon—they couldn't overcome their more experienced opponents.

Ram and Krajicek have both been ranked No. 1 in doubles. Ram has four Grand Slam titles in men's doubles with another partner, while Krajicek has one. They received coaching advice from Bob and Mike Bryan, who were present in the stands.

Support from Legends

The Bryan brothers have won 16 Grand Slam doubles championships and an Olympic gold medal at the 2012 London Games. Bob Bryan is currently the captain of the U.S. men's tennis team in Paris.

All players wore red shirts during the match and communicated clearly over the quiet crowd before each point began. The Americans' shouts of "You! You!" were audible during play.

Roaring Crowd

The atmosphere grew loud under the closed retractable roof due to rain, especially after points won by Nadal and Alcaraz. Chants of "Ra-fa!" and "Es-pa-ña!" filled the air, occasionally met by quieter shouts of "U-S-A!"

Nadal remains one of Roland Garros' most beloved players, with a steel statue outside Chatrier commemorating his achievements. It was here that he received his 14 French Open trophies and lost to Djokovic earlier this week.

No one knows if Nadal will return to compete at Roland Garros again, not even Nadal himself.
