Mumbai Police Overcome Challenges to Safeguard T-20 Victory Parade
Mumbai Police faced a challenging evening on July 4 as the victory parade for the T-20 World Cup-winning Indian cricket team caused a stampede-like situation in South Mumbai. Several children went missing in the crowd but were later reunited with their parents. Additionally, four to five individuals were hospitalised after fainting or falling ill, according to officials.

Western Railway announced an extra service for Borivali at around 9:30 p.m. to manage the additional rush. Over 400 Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police personnel were deployed at Churchgate station for crowd control, with no untoward incidents reported, said a senior RPF official. Meanwhile, Central Railways' Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus experienced delays in many train services due to the chaos.
Victory Parade Causes Traffic Chaos
Hundreds of vehicles were stuck in traffic at Marine Drive and nearby roads from the evening onwards. Fans clad in blue jerseys of the Indian team chanted slogans like "Bharat Mata Ki Jai," "Jitega Bhai Jitega, India Jitega," "Jai Sriram," and "Vande Mataram" along a stretch of almost two kilometres. The parade began near NCPA at the southern tip of Marine Drive around 7:45 p.m.
As the bus carrying the victorious team moved towards Wankhede Stadium, it was escorted by hundreds of police personnel. Despite the heavy security presence, crowds pressing around the bus created a stampede-like situation at several points. However, police managed to avert any major incidents.
Heartwarming Moments Amidst Chaos
Both lanes of Marine Drive were jam-packed, but people made way for an ambulance. Mumbai Police shared a video on X showing this heartwarming scene and praised the spirit of cricket fans. The caption read, "Siren Bajta gaya, Rasta banta gaya as the siren blared, the road cleared." Another video aired by a local news channel showed a policeman struggling to carry a fainted girl on his shoulder through the crowd.
Police had deployed a large number of personnel and made extensive security arrangements between Marine Drive and Wankhede Stadium to prevent any untoward incidents. An official mentioned that people entering Wankhede Stadium were frisked, and plainclothes policemen were stationed at various spots.
The situation remained chaotic at several locations along the parade route. Despite this, no major incidents occurred thanks to the efforts of Mumbai Police and other authorities involved in managing the event.
The parade highlighted both the enthusiasm of cricket fans and the challenges faced by law enforcement during such large-scale events. The successful management of potential crises ensured that the celebration remained largely safe and enjoyable for all attendees.
