Mirabai Chanu's Quest for Second Olympic Medal Ends in Fourth Place
Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu narrowly missed securing a second Olympic medal, finishing fourth in the women's 49kg event on Wednesday. A failed lift in her final attempt dashed her hopes, leaving her with a total lift of 199kg (88kg+111kg) at the South Paris Arena.

Chanu, who turns 30 on Thursday, lifted 3kg less than her Tokyo Olympics performance, where she secured a silver medal with a total of 202kg. She managed only three successful lifts out of six attempts, two of which were in the clean and jerk section.
Mirabai's Performance and Challenges
Despite an injury-plagued Olympic cycle, Mirabai kept herself in medal contention after the snatch event. However, her failure to lift 114kg in her final clean and jerk attempt cost her a podium finish. If successful, she would have won the bronze medal.
China's Hou Zhihui set a new Olympic record in the clean and jerk, defending her title with a total lift of 206kg (89kg+117kg). Romanian Mihaela Cambei claimed the silver with a total of 205kg (93kg+112kg), while Surodchana Khambao from Thailand took the bronze with 200kg (88kg+112kg).
Snatch Section Highlights
Wearing gold earrings shaped like Olympic rings given by her mother before the Rio Games, Mirabai started with a modest 85kg snatch, which she lifted smoothly. She then attempted to equal her personal best of 88kg but failed on her second lift. However, she succeeded in her final attempt at 88kg.
Cambei led after the snatch section with a final lift of 93kg. Zhihui was four kilograms behind Cambei with an 89kg snatch, having managed only two legal lifts. Mirabai's Achilles heel remained evident in this section.
Clean and Jerk Section Struggles
Mirabai had a shaky start in the clean and jerk. She was the last to take her first attempt and cleaned 111kg but couldn't complete the second part. On her second attempt at the same weight, she successfully lifted the barbell to the relief of herself and her coaches.
Unfortunately, things went wrong for Mirabai as she failed her final attempt at lifting 114kg. This weight was five kilograms less than her personal best in clean and jerk, highlighting the challenges she faced during this event.
The former world champion's efforts were commendable given her circumstances. Despite not securing a medal, Mirabai Chanu's performance remains a testament to her resilience and determination.
