Manchester City and Premier League Celebrate Victory Over Financial Fairness Regulations

Manchester City and the English Premier League both expressed satisfaction on Monday after a key financial regulation was contested. The arbitration panel's findings were welcomed by both parties. City stated that the regulations were deemed "unlawful," while the league claimed it had "abused its dominant position." The tribunal upheld the necessity of the Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules, dismissing most of City's objections.

The APT rules are crucial for ensuring fair market value in commercial agreements with entities closely linked to club owners. Manchester City's Perspective on APT Rules

City declared, "The club has succeeded with its claim: The Associated Party Transaction rules have been found to be unlawful and the Premier League's decisions on two specific MCFC sponsorship transactions have been set aside." The club further noted that the tribunal found these rules to be "structurally unfair" and specifically unfair in their application to City, backed by Abu Dhabi.

A significant ruling in City's favour was that shareholder loans, potentially offered at low or no interest rates, should not be excluded from APT regulations. This decision highlights a key aspect of City's argument against the league's financial oversight.

League's Stance on Tribunal Findings

The league maintained that its evaluation of City's sponsorship deals was not unreasonable.
