Luca Hamari Proud After Olympic Bout With Iman Khelif Amidst Gender Row

In a highly anticipated match at the Paris Olympics, Hungary's Luca Anna Hamari faced Algerian boxer Iman Khelif in the women's 66kg category. Despite the controversy surrounding Khelif's gender eligibility, Hamari chose to compete and felt proud of her performance.

Hamari Proud After Bout With Khelif

The bout saw Khelif securing a spot in the semifinals, guaranteeing at least a bronze medal. Her previous opponent, Angela Carini from Italy, had withdrawn after just 46 seconds due to Khelif's powerful punches. This incident had sparked significant debate within the boxing community.

Controversy Surrounding Khelif

Khelif had been banned from the 2023 World Championship in New Delhi for failing a gender eligibility test. Despite this, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) defended their decision to allow her to compete as a female in Paris. The situation led to widespread discussions about her participation in the women's competition.

Hamari, determined not to back down, showcased her resilience by enduring several punches and landing some on Khelif. Ultimately, Khelif won with a unanimous 5-0 decision. The crowd cheered for Khelif as she emerged victorious.

Respect and Sportsmanship

Unlike Carini, who refused to shake hands with Khelif and later regretted it, Hamari showed respect by hugging her opponent. Khelif reciprocated by holding the ropes for Hamari as she exited the ring. This gesture highlighted the sportsmanship between the two athletes.

After the match, Hamari expressed her satisfaction with her performance. "This was a hard fight, but I think I could do everything what I wanted before the fight. And I think it was a good fight. I'm so proud of myself and I'm so grateful to be here," she said to the media.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Khelif did not speak to the media but was seen wiping tears as she walked through the mixed zone. Hamari acknowledged the difficulties faced by both boxers over the past few days and emphasized her respect for Khelif.

Hamari was accompanied by Zsolt Gyulai, President of Hungary Olympic Committee and two-time Olympic champion. Balazs Furias, an IOC member from Hungary, stated that not entering the ring was never an option for them.

"We believe that every match is decided on the play field and not elsewhere. So we are absolutely convinced, 100% convinced, that every match has to be decided on the play field, this time, this case, in the ring," Furias said.

Hungarian Determination

Furias emphasized that Hungarians are always ready to fight bravely and heroically. He noted that Hamari's determination was evident from the start and that she gave her best in the ring.

"She always wanted to fight, and as a consequence of what I have said before, it was also clear from the very beginning that Luca will fight and give her best, and that's what you could have seen in the rings," he added.

The events in Paris have raised questions that need careful evaluation after the Games. Furias hinted at potential consequences but expressed confidence in the IOC's ability to make appropriate decisions.

The Paris boxing competitions have highlighted significant issues that will require thorough assessment post-Games. As loyal members of the International Olympic family, Hungarian officials trust that necessary actions will be taken by the IOC.
