Lockie Ferguson Makes History with T20I's Most Economical Spell
New Zealand's Lockie Ferguson made a monumental mark in the cricket world on Monday by delivering the most economical spell ever recorded in T20I history during a World Cup match. His exceptional performance against Papua New Guinea, with figures of 4-4-0-3, not only etched his name in the records but also highlighted his precision and skill on the field. Ferguson's achievement of bowling four maiden overs in a T20I match places him alongside Canada's Saad Bin Zafar as the only bowlers to have accomplished this feat.

The significance of Ferguson's spell was magnified as he bettered Zafar’s previous record of 4-4-0-2 set against Canada in November 2021 during the T20 World Cup Americas Regional qualifier match. The right-arm pacer from New Zealand initiated his record-breaking performance by dismissing PNG captain Assad Vala for six on the very first ball of his spell, setting a challenging pace for the opposition.
Ferguson's relentless attack continued throughout his overs, making it increasingly difficult for PNG batters to find any rhythm. His second wicket came in the 12th over when he trapped Charles Amini lbw, and shortly after, in the 14th over, he claimed Chad Soper’s wicket, catching him off-guard with an inside edge that hit the off-stump. Despite these setbacks, PNG managed to scramble for a few runs through leg-byes immediately after Soper's dismissal.
Although New Zealand and Papua New Guinea were both out of contention for the tournament, Ferguson’s record-setting performance provided a moment of pride and solace for the Kiwi team. His ability to maintain a tight line with pace and slight movement off the surface was instrumental in securing this historic achievement. Ferguson’s spell not only showcases his exceptional talent but also sets a new benchmark for bowlers in T20I cricket, especially in World Cup scenarios.
