KL Rahul Aims for Retention in Talks with LSG Owner Goenka
The previous season concluded on a disappointing note for KL Rahul, who has expressed his desire to be retained by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to owner Sanjiv Goenka. However, no assurances have been provided by the top management. Rahul, once a vice-captain of the national team, is no longer considered for India's T20 format.

An IPL Governing Council member, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, "Yes, Rahul came to Kolkata and met Dr Goenka at RPG head office. He has clearly told Dr Goenka that he wants to be retained. However, till BCCI comes up with retention policy, LSG management wouldn't want to chalk out their plans." This indicates that LSG is waiting for the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) retention guidelines before making any decisions.
Retention Uncertainty
The source further elaborated, "Look, Rahul wants retention but till LSG knows how many are to be retained and what's the new purse, they can't commit anyone." This highlights the uncertainty surrounding player retention and budget allocations for the upcoming season. The LSG management has not commented on this matter.
Rahul's leadership was questioned last season despite leading LSG to playoffs in the first two IPL seasons. Many believe Gautam Gambhir's strategic input played a significant role rather than Rahul's leadership skills. His leadership has not been effective across various franchises he has represented.
Financial Implications
Retaining Rahul as a primary option could cost LSG between Rs 18 to 20 crore if the team purse increases. This substantial amount might deter franchises from investing in him, especially those seeking X-factor players at the top. Rahul's batting style is considered outdated for T20 cricket, reducing his appeal among franchises.
An incident last year where Rahul had an animated conversation with Goenka after a heavy defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad went viral. Many later described it as a candid discussion between the owner and skipper. Despite this, even if Rahul is retained by LSG, it is unlikely he will be their first choice.
Market Appeal
Rahul's market appeal is another concern. Unlike MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, or even Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav, Rahul does not attract significant team sponsorships. This lack of commercial pull might force him back into the auction pool where he may not be highly sought after.
"If Royal Challengers Bengaluru were serious about taking him back, he wouldn't have come to Kolkata on his own accord," noted an insider. This suggests that Rahul's batting style and leadership have not garnered much interest from other franchises either.
In related news, LSG has finalised a deal with Zaheer Khan who will soon be unveiled as a mentor for the team. This move indicates LSG's strategy to strengthen their support staff ahead of the next season.
The situation remains fluid as LSG awaits BCCI's retention policy before making any commitments regarding player retention and budget allocations.
