Tour de France Champion Jonas Vingegaard Hospitalized After Basque Country Crash

In a distressing turn of events at the Basque Country Vuelta, Jonas Vingegaard, the two-time defending Tour de France champion, was involved in a severe crash that necessitated his immediate hospitalization. The incident, which unfolded during the race's fourth stage with less than 30 kilometers to the finish line, also saw Australian cyclist Jay Vine and Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel among those affected by the crash.

Vingegaard Hospitalized After Crash

Team Visma confirmed that Vingegaard was "conscious and will be examined in the hospital" following the accident. The Danish cyclist was seen receiving medical attention at the roadside, immobilized with an oxygen mask and a neck brace before being transported to the hospital. The crash's impact was significant, with Vingegaard unable to move much while being treated.

The accident occurred as the peloton was navigating a right-hand turn, leading to a chain reaction where some riders slid and others were forced off the road. The proximity of large rocks near the road added to the peril, though it remains unclear if any of the cyclists collided with these obstacles.

Other notable cyclists involved in the incident include Quinten Hermans, Natnael Tesfatsion, and Primoz Roglic, a celebrated Giro d'Italia and Spanish Vuelta champion. Despite the chaos, Evenepoel managed to walk away from the crash site but still proceeded to the hospital for further evaluation.

In response to the crash, race officials made the decision to neutralize the stage until the finish line. This meant that only six riders, who had been leading at the time of the accident, were permitted to contest a sprint finish for stage honors. However, their finishing times were excluded from affecting the general classification standings.

The race's resumption was postponed until medical personnel could rejoin and ensure adequate support for the remaining participants. This incident has cast a shadow over the event, highlighting once again the inherent risks professional cyclists face during competition.
