Jason Gillespie Resigns as Pakistan's Test Team Coach; Aaqib Javed Appointed Replacement
Jason Gillespie has stepped down as the coach of Pakistan's Test cricket team. Aaqib Javed, a former fast bowler, will take over for the upcoming two-match series against South Africa. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made this announcement on Thursday. Pakistan is already in South Africa for the white-ball segment of their tour.

Gillespie's contract was originally set to last until 2026. However, he resigned after the PCB chose not to renew Tim Nielsen's contract. Nielsen had been appointed as the high-performance coach based on Gillespie's recommendation. Gillespie was also unhappy with being removed from team selection and pitch preparation duties.
Coaching Changes and Team Dynamics
Aaqib Javed is currently serving as the interim coach for Pakistan's white-ball teams. His appointment as senior selector came with full authority over team selection. This shift in power dynamics led to tensions between the PCB and foreign coaches like Gillespie and Gary Kirsten.
Gary Kirsten, who joined alongside Gillespie as a coach for the white-ball team, resigned before Pakistan's series in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Kirsten cited disagreements with the PCB regarding authority as his reason for leaving.
Impact on Foreign Coaches
The PCB had initially hired both Gillespie and Kirsten on two-year contracts before the T20 World Cup 2024. They promised a new era for Pakistan cricket. However, the introduction of Aaqib Javed with extensive powers led to a fallout with these foreign coaches.
Pakistan is set to play two Test matches against South Africa starting December 26. The team is already in South Africa preparing for this series after completing their white-ball matches.
The changes in coaching staff highlight ongoing challenges within the PCB regarding authority and team management. These developments have affected relationships with international coaching staff.
