Jannik Sinner Triumphs Over Ben Shelton to Secure Wimbledon Semifinal Spot Despite Injury

Jannik Sinner, despite dealing with a right elbow injury, showcased impressive form on Wednesday. He defeated 10th-seeded Ben Shelton 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-4 to secure a spot in the Wimbledon semifinals for the second time. Sinner, ranked No. 1, wore a white sleeve on his right arm, with tape visible above and below the elbow.

Two days earlier, Sinner had slipped and injured his elbow during his fourth-round match against Grigor Dimitrov. Despite the pain while serving and hitting forehands, he advanced when Dimitrov retired in the third set due to a chest muscle tear. Sinner had an MRI on Tuesday and initially canceled practice but later had a light indoor session.

Strong Performance Against Shelton

Facing Shelton on Court No. 1, Sinner appeared unaffected by his injury. He won 27 of 29 service points in the first set and hit 15 winners with only one unforced error. Shelton stayed competitive until the tiebreaker, where Sinner capitalised on Shelton's double-fault and four forehand errors to take control.

Sinner faced two break points at the start of the second set but saved both and was not threatened again. He broke Shelton's serve once in the second set and again in the final game of the match. This victory sets up a semifinal clash against either Novak Djokovic or Flavio Cobolli.

Previous Wimbledon Experience

Sinner's previous semifinal appearance at Wimbledon was in 2023 when he was defeated by Djokovic. The Italian player is also a three-time Grand Slam champion and was runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at last month's French Open.

As Sinner prepares for his next match, he will aim to overcome any lingering effects of his elbow injury. His performance against Shelton suggests he is ready to compete at the highest level despite recent setbacks.
