Lionel Messi's much-awaited GOAT Tour of India ran into serious trouble on Saturday after scenes of chaos and vandalism erupted at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

What began as a celebratory event for thousands of football fans quickly spiraled into anger and unrest following alleged mismanagement and Messi's early exit from the venue.

What Triggered the Crowd Uproar at Salt Lake Stadium

Fans who had waited for hours and paid hefty amounts to watch Messi in person were left disappointed when the Argentine superstar remained largely inaccessible from the stands. Messi was surrounded by political figures, club officials and organizers, leaving ordinary ticket holders with barely any glimpse of him.

Within roughly 20 minutes of arriving, Messi decided to leave the stadium. The sudden departure shocked the crowd and frustration soon turned into protest, with fans throwing water bottles and venting their anger over what they felt was a complete breakdown of planning and crowd control.

Vandalism and Loss of Control Inside the Stadium

As tempers flared, the situation deteriorated rapidly. Sections of the crowd uprooted bucket seats and hurled them onto the field. Soon after, fencing was breached and thousands of fans poured onto the Yuba Bharati pitch.

Temporary seating structures were dismantled, the stage was damaged, and even furniture in the seating area was set on fire. Police initially struggled to contain the situation before resorting to lathi-charge in an attempt to disperse the crowd and restore order.

Anger Against Organisers and Political Fallout

Much of the anger was directed at organiser Satadru Dutta, with fans demanding refunds and calling for legal action. State minister Arup Biswas also faced heavy criticism after visuals showed him in close proximity to Messi, smiling and posing for photographs while fans in the stands remained frustrated.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee later issued an apology to Messi and assured that an investigation would be conducted into the lapses. The incident has also sparked a political blame game between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, with both sides accusing each other over the mismanagement.

Will Messi's GOAT Tour Continue After Kolkata Chaos?

Despite the scale of the unrest and the embarrassment caused to the city, the tour itself is not expected to be affected. Lionel Messi is scheduled to depart Kolkata around 2:30 PM on Saturday.

Along with Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul, the football legend will head to Hyderabad, where the next leg of the GOAT Tour of India is set to take place. While the Kolkata episode has left serious questions over planning and crowd management, the tour is expected to move ahead as scheduled.
