India's Cool Move: Portable Air Conditioners Delivered Athletes At Sweltering Paris Olympics

Indian athletes at the Paris Olympics 2024 are facing extreme and inadequate cooling in accommodations. To address this, the Sports Ministry has provided 40 portable air conditioners to ensure a more comfortable stay for the athletes.

The decision to send air conditioners was made after discussions with the Indian Olympic Association and the French Embassy. "Taking into consideration the issues faced by athletes at the Olympic Games village because of the temperature and humidity in Paris, the Ministry of Sports decided to provide 40 ACs in the Games Village rooms where the Indian athletes are staying," a ministry source told media.

Paris Olympics Heat Wave

Temperatures have been soaring in both Paris and Chateauroux, reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius on some days. This has caused significant discomfort for athletes, including those competing in events like the men's 50m rifle 3-positions event, where all eight finalists were seen sweating profusely.

Even before the Games commenced, many contingents voiced concerns about Paris's weather conditions. The organisers had announced that they would avoid using air conditioning to reduce the event's carbon footprint. Instead, they introduced an underfloor cooling system and built-in insulation at the Games Village.

Global Response to Heat

Despite these measures, several countries have opted for portable air conditioners to combat the heat. The USA contingent brought their own units, and now India has followed suit. Reports indicate that other nations have also purchased portable ACs to manage the high temperatures.

The ministry source added, "The decision was taken early on Friday and the cost is being funded by the Ministry." The plug-and-play units have already been installed and are in use by Indian athletes. This move aims to provide better rest and comfort, which is crucial for optimal performance.

The extreme weather conditions have been a significant challenge for all participants. The organising committee's efforts to implement eco-friendly cooling solutions have not fully alleviated concerns. As a result, many teams have taken matters into their own hands by securing additional cooling equipment.

"The ACs are plug-and-play units and athletes have already started using them. It is expected that with this they will have a more comfortable stay and get better rest which is much needed for a good performance," added another source from the ministry.
