India's 9-Year-Old Star Aarit Kapil Beats Chess Grandmaster Raset Ziatdinov

Aarit Kapil, a young chess prodigy from Delhi, made history by becoming the youngest Indian to defeat a grandmaster. At just 9 years, 2 months, and 18 days old, he triumphed over Raset Ziatdinov from the United States during the ninth round of the KIIT International Open tournament in Bhubaneshwar.

Despite not winning the tournament, Aarit's victory marked a significant milestone. Russian Grandmaster Boris Savchenko emerged as the winner of the KIIT International Open tournament. Aarit's next competitions are scheduled in Durgapur and Pune.

Youngest Chess Prodigy

Aarit is now recognised as the third youngest globally to achieve this feat in classical chess. The record for being the youngest to beat a grandmaster belongs to Ashwath Kaushik, an Indian-origin player from Singapore. Earlier this year, Kaushik defeated Jacek Stupa of Poland at just 8 years and six months old.

In his match against Ziatdinov, Aarit faced a challenging opponent. The 66-year-old American maintained an advantage due to his superior pawn structure. However, Aarit displayed resilience and strategic acumen with his white pieces.

Strategic Play

Aarit's determination shone through as he capitalised on Ziatdinov's final mistake, leading to the loss of his knight. This crucial error allowed Aarit to convert his advantage into victory after 63 moves. His calculated approach and precise execution were key factors in securing this win.

This achievement places Aarit among India's top young chess talents. His performance in Bhubaneshwar has garnered attention and admiration from chess enthusiasts across the country.

The young player's journey continues with upcoming tournaments that promise further opportunities for growth and success in his budding chess career.
