India's Hockey Team Secures Bronze Medal: Coach Fulton Reflects on Victory

A bronze medal finish was not the ultimate goal for hockey coach Craig Fulton, but he appreciated the achievement. The South African coach acknowledged that underdog India rose from disappointments when no one expected them to succeed. India secured a 2-1 victory over Spain in their bronze play-off match.

India Wins Bronze: Fulton Reflects

India's last consecutive Olympic medals were in 1968 and 1972. The team faced a challenging build-up to the Games, including a 0-5 defeat by Australia and struggles in the FIH Pro-League. Despite these setbacks, Fulton believed his team could perform on the biggest stage.

India's Determination and Team Building

Fulton emphasised that between 2021 and 2024, the focus was on building a cohesive team. "I think the biggest thing was that we became a team, and we did that through a very short space of time. We needed to build trust because that's the number one thing that you can rely on," he said.

He noted their progress during the Asian Games and acknowledged tough times in Australia and the Pro League. "We knew we had it in us, and we came in here as underdogs. In a sense, no one even thought we were going to make the top four," Fulton added.

Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Results

India largely dominated their match against Spain, attacking more and defending well. However, Fulton admitted it was a tough game. "Spain threw everything at us. And it was beautiful to finally get the results," he said.

Spain initially took the lead with a penalty stroke, but India's mindset remained strong. "The mindset is now such that they have the belief that the team can bounce back," Fulton stated.

Reflecting on their strategy, he said, "We knew if we got corners, we were going to score because we had a great plan. And it worked like a bolt." He praised their performance in the third quarter, highlighting their ability to put real pressure on Spain.

Consistency and Future Prospects

India broke their 41-year Olympic medal drought in Tokyo, with another medal following within three years. When asked about maintaining consistency, Fulton said, "You saw the consistency in the tournament. It was a tough start for us."

He mentioned their qualification by beating Ireland and playing well against Belgium despite needing improvements. "And then that came in the Aussie game," he added.

Fulton credited Paddy Upton for helping regain trust within the team. "Paddy Upton had a big input into that. But so has our staff, so has our group," he said.

Only India and Germany have achieved back-to-back medals, which Fulton believes sends a clear message: "That shows we're on the right track. We're proud of our ability to get up after disappointments."

The coach shared insights into pre-match conversations: "We told them it's not about who deserves it. It's about who wants it more and that was a key message for everyone."

Fulton concluded by expressing pride in India's resilience and determination throughout their journey. The team's ability to overcome challenges and achieve results reflects their growth and potential for future success.
