India Defies Odds with Olympic Bronze in Hockey: Coach Fulton's Pride

India's hockey team secured a bronze medal by defeating Spain 2-1 in the play-off match. Coach Craig Fulton expressed satisfaction with the achievement, especially given the team's underdog status and previous disappointments. This victory marks India's second consecutive Olympic medal, a feat last achieved in 1968 and 1972.

Indias Olympic Hockey Bronze

Fulton highlighted the team's journey from 2021 to 2024 as a period of building trust and unity. "I think the biggest thing was that we became a team, and we did that through a very short space of time. We needed to build trust, because that's the number one thing that you can rely on," he said. The coach acknowledged the challenges faced during tough times in Australia and the FIH Pro-League.

India's Resilience and Strategy

Despite Spain taking an early lead with a penalty stroke, India remained composed. Fulton noted the team's belief in their ability to bounce back. "The mindset is now such that they have the belief that the team can bounce back," he stated. The third quarter saw India applying significant pressure, which paid off.

The coach also mentioned Paddy Upton's contribution to rebuilding trust within the team. "And we had good results. And, yeah, to get the trust back there, Paddy's Paddy Upton had a big input into that. But so has our staff, so has our group," Fulton added.

Building Trust and Unity

Fulton emphasized that India's performance in the Asian Games was crucial for starting this process. "And I thought we did a good job in the Asian Games to start that process. And then we obviously pushed through," he said. The team faced numerous challenges but managed to overcome them.

The coach acknowledged Spain's efforts during the match but praised his team's resilience. "Spain threw everything at us. And it was beautiful to finally get the results," he remarked. The victory was a testament to India's ability to rise after setbacks.

Consistency and Future Prospects

India's consistency throughout the tournament was evident, according to Fulton. "You saw the consistency in the tournament. It was a tough start for us," he said. The team showed improvement with each game, particularly after qualifying by beating Ireland and performing well against Belgium.

Reflecting on India's journey, Fulton said, "We knew we had it in us, and we came in here as underdogs. In a sense, no one even thought we were going to make the top four." This underdog status made their achievement even more remarkable.

Fulton stressed that achieving back-to-back medals sends a clear message about India's progress in hockey. "Only India and Germany have achieved back-to-back medals and Fulton said it gives a clear message: That shows we're on the right track," he stated.

The pre-match conversations focused on desire rather than deservingness. "We told them, it's not about who deserves it. It's about who wants it more and that was a key message for everyone," Fulton revealed.

The coach concluded by expressing pride in India's ability to recover from disappointments and deliver strong performances on big stages. This resilience is seen as a positive sign for future competitions.
