India vs Afghanistan: Goalless Draw in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers
In a closely contested Group A fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, India and Afghanistan were unable to break the deadlock, resulting in a 0-0 draw on Thursday in Abha, Saudi Arabia. Despite numerous attempts from both sides, the match ended without any goals, leaving the teams to share the points.

The first half was marked by an energetic display of football, with both teams creating several opportunities. India's Manvir Singh came particularly close to scoring on two occasions, highlighting the team's aggressive approach from the start. However, despite the open play and numerous attacking moves, neither side managed to find the back of the net in the first 45+3 minutes.
Coaches Igor Stimac of India and Ashley Westwood of Afghanistan were visibly animated on the sidelines, urging their teams on as both sets of players struggled to capitalize on their chances. The match saw its fair share of half chances, but goalkeepers on both ends were relatively untested throughout the game.
India's offensive strategy seemed to pay off in terms of creating chances, with a notable moment in the 17th minute when Manvir Singh missed a golden opportunity to put his team ahead. Similarly, Afghanistan had moments where they could have taken the lead, notably when Mosawer Ahadi's effort was easily handled by Indian goalkeeper Sandhu.
The second half continued in much the same vein as the first, with both teams searching for a breakthrough. India had a promising chance in the 58th minute when Akash Mishra's cross found Vikram Pratap Singh, whose finish was lacking. Afghanistan also had a significant opportunity thwarted by Rahul Bheke's timely interception, preventing Rahmat Akbari and Omid Popalzay from scoring.
One of the match's best chances fell to India when Subhasish Bose's free header from a corner kick went off target. Despite these efforts, the match concluded without any goals, reflecting a well-fought but ultimately fruitless endeavor for both teams.
This draw leaves both India and Afghanistan with points to ponder as they continue their campaign in the 2026 World Cup and 2027 AFC Asian Cup preliminary joint qualification matches. The inability to convert chances into goals was evident for both sides, setting up an intriguing scenario for their upcoming fixtures in the qualifiers.
