Century-Old Roshanara Club Seized by Delhi Development Authority
The historic Roshanara Club in Delhi was sealed off and taken over by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). This action follows an eviction notice served six months prior due to an expired lease. The club, established in 1922, is known for its natural beauty and colonial charm.
The historic Roshanara Club, a significant landmark in the history of Indian cricket, was sealed and taken into possession by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Friday. The club, which has been around for over a century and celebrated its 100th anniversary last year, is known for its natural beauty, green fields and colonial-era allure. Located in North Delhi, it has grown to become one of India's most prestigious clubs.
Eviction Notice Served Six Months Ago

The DDA action comes nearly six months after an eviction notice was served to the club. A senior official from the DDA stated that this step was necessitated due to the expiration of the club's lease. The authority had followed due process as per section 5 2 of the Public Premises Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants Act, 1971 or PPE Act, 1971.
Court Upholds Eviction Order
In addition to serving an eviction notice earlier this year, legal proceedings were also initiated against Roshanara Club Ltd. Following court orders that upheld its eviction order dated April 12th ,2023; The DDA evicted and took possession of Roshanara Club Ltd's premises whose leases had expired eleven years ago in 2012 and again six years back in 2017," said a statement issued by DDA.
Roshanara Club: A Century-Old Legacy
The Roshanara Club holds a special place in Indian cricket history being established on August 15th ,1922 - marking it as one of India’s oldest sports institutions. Over time it became more than just a sporting venue; It evolved into a social hub with its grandeur reminiscent of colonial times attracting members from all walks of life who appreciated not only its sporting facilities but also the natural beauty and charm it offered. This recent development marks a significant shift in the club's long-standing history.
Conclusion
The closure of Roshanara Club Ltd. is indeed an end of an era, marking a major turning point in Indian sports history. The DDA's action, while justified by legal provisions, signifies the loss of a century-old institution that has been synonymous with cricket and social life in Delhi for generations. As the city moves forward into new eras, one can only hope that institutions like these are not forgotten but instead preserved as they form an integral part of our cultural heritage.
