Harmanpreet Kaur Acknowledges India's Underwhelming Start in Women's T20 World Cup, Sees Potential for Improvement

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted her team's performance was below par in their 58-run loss to New Zealand in the Women's T20 World Cup opener. Despite this setback, she remains optimistic about her team's potential for better performances in upcoming matches. India was dismissed for 102 runs in 19 overs while chasing a target of 161, with no player scoring more than 20 runs.

Harmanpreet Kaur Sees Potential for Improvement

Kaur acknowledged that her team did not play their best cricket and emphasised the importance of future games. "We didn't play our best cricket. Going forward we know every game is important," she stated during the post-match presentation. She disagreed with the notion that the target of 161 was challenging on a slow pitch, noting that they have successfully chased similar scores before.

India's Batting Struggles

The Indian team struggled with their batting, losing wickets regularly and failing to build partnerships. Kaur mentioned that they were prepared for a target of around 160-170 runs. "While batting, we knew someone had to bat through but we kept losing wickets," she explained. The team is set to face Pakistan on Sunday, and Kaur is confident they will perform better against their rivals.

Reflecting on the bowling performance, Kaur felt that her team missed opportunities to capitalise on chances created during the match. "We created chances but we were not able to avail those chances," she said, acknowledging that New Zealand played superior cricket.

Fielding Errors and Lessons

Kaur also pointed out fielding mistakes as an area for improvement, possibly referring to Renuka Thakur's outfield error and wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh's mistake during the Powerplay. These errors serve as learning experiences for the team moving forward.

New Zealand's captain Sophie Devine, who was named Player of the Match for her unbeaten 57 off 36 balls, expressed her surprise at dominating a strong team like India. "I'm really proud of this group. People have been speaking about our recent results, coming out against a world-class side like India, to produce that performance I'm overwhelmed," Devine remarked.

Devine highlighted that New Zealand had been targeting this game for a long time, especially after their recent defeats leading up to the tournament. Her team's performance against India was a significant achievement and a testament to their preparation and determination.

Despite the disappointing start, Kaur believes in her team's ability to bounce back and deliver stronger performances in future matches. The lessons learned from this defeat will be crucial as they prepare for their next challenge against Pakistan.
