Father's Sacrifice: Selling Land to Support Vaibhav's Historic Cricket Journey
In a remarkable turn of events, Sanjiv Suryavanshi's decision to sell his farmland to support his son Vaibhav's cricketing dreams has paid off. At just 13 years and eight months, Vaibhav made history by becoming the youngest player ever selected in the IPL auction. Rajasthan Royals secured him for Rs 1.10 crore during the final day of the auction in Jeddah.

Sanjiv, who hails from Motipur village near Samastipur in Bihar, expressed his overwhelming emotions. "Woh ab sirf humra bituwa nahi pura Bihar ka bituwa hai," he said over the phone, indicating that Vaibhav is now a son of Bihar. Vaibhav is currently in Dubai for the U-19 Asia Cup.
Vaibhav's Journey and Challenges
Vaibhav's journey began at the age of eight when he excelled in U-16 district trials. Sanjiv recalled taking him for cricket coaching in Samastipur despite financial struggles. "I have sold my land. Financial issues are still there," he admitted, highlighting the significant investment cricket demands.
Addressing controversies about Vaibhav's age, Sanjiv clarified that his son first underwent a BCCI bone test at eight and a half years old. "He has already played India U-19. We don't fear anyone," he asserted, ready for any age verification again.
Bidding War and Trials
Vaibhav's base price was Rs 30 lakh, with Delhi Capitals making the initial bid. Rajasthan Royals entered at Rs 35 lakh and eventually outbid DC. The Royals had invited Vaibhav for trials in Nagpur, where batting coach Vikram Rathour set a challenging task of scoring 17 runs in an over.
Vaibhav impressed by hitting three sixes in that scenario and further showcased his talent by smashing eight sixes and four fours during trials. His father proudly recounted these achievements, emphasizing Vaibhav's dedication to cricket.
Keeping Focus on Cricket
Sanjiv aims to keep monetary discussions away from his young son, who is primarily focused on playing cricket. "He just wants to play cricket and nothing else," Sanjiv mentioned, noting that Vaibhav's interests have shifted from cartoons like Doremon to his sport.
BCA's Support and Praise
The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) president Rakesh Tiwary praised Vaibhav after his selection by Rajasthan Royals. "Vaibhav Suryavanshi's incredible achievement at such a young age fills us with immense pride," Tiwary stated.
Tiwary highlighted Vaibhav's journey from Bihar to the IPL as a testament to his talent and hard work. He emphasized BCA's commitment to nurturing young talent and expressed confidence that Vaibhav will continue to inspire aspiring cricketers across Bihar and beyond.
Rakesh Tiwary concluded by congratulating Vaibhav and his family on this significant milestone, underscoring the potential within Bihar's cricketing community.
