Gukesh Draws with Fedoseev While Mendonca Suffers Defeat at Tata Steel Chess Tournament

World champion D Gukesh played to a draw in the second round against Slovenia's Vladimir Fedoseev at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. Meanwhile, Leon Luke Mendonca faced his second consecutive defeat, losing to Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Gukesh, using the black pieces, adopted a cautious strategy after his intense first-round match with Anish Giri.

Gukesh Draws; Mendonca Loses at Tata Steel

Despite appearing at a disadvantage, Gukesh managed to neutralise Fedoseev's advantage. He guided the game into an equal rook-and-pawn endgame, resulting in a draw. In contrast, Mendonca had a challenging game. He opted for the French defence but encountered new strategies from Abdusattorov, who aimed to out-calculate him.

Chess Tournament Highlights

The middle game saw both players castling on opposite sides, putting Mendonca's king under pressure. Abdusattorov seized the opportunity and secured his first win of the tournament. This match concluded quickly compared to others on the day. Fabiano Caruana stood out by defeating Dutch player Jorden van Foreest.

Caruana employed a London system and capitalised on an unforced error by van Foreest to gain a pawn, which proved decisive. The results from round two of the Masters category included Fedoseev drawing with Gukesh and Abdusattorov defeating Mendonca.

In the Challengers section, Divya Deshmukh from India drew with Nguyen Thai van Dam of Czech Republic. R Vaishali also drew with Miaoyi Lu from China. Nodirbek Yakubboev of Uzbekistan drew with Nodirbek Kazybek from Kazakhstan. Benjamin Bok from the Netherlands defeated Ediz Gurel of Turkey.

Arthur Pijpers from the Netherlands drew with Aydin Sulemanli of Azerbaijan. These matches highlighted the competitive nature of the tournament across both categories.
