Kolkata: RG Kar Unrest Forces East Bengal Vs Mohun Bagan Durand Cup Derby To Be Called Off
The much-anticipated Durand Cup 2024 group stage clash between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant, scheduled for August 18 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, has been cancelled due to potential security concerns arising from the ongoing protests related to the RG Kar Medical College incident.
According to Sportstar, the Kolkata Police expressed difficulties in providing the necessary security for the high-profile Derby amid the current unrest.

The protests in Kolkata, triggered by the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, have created a tense situation, making it challenging for the police to manage the additional security demands of the match.
Consequently, the remainder of the Durand Cup matches might be relocated to Jamshedpur.
A source informed that while Jamshedpur is a potential venue, "there might be logistical issues. But nothing is confirmed at the moment and we are looking for the best solution."
With the cancellation, both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan will share a point each.
While Mohun Bagan has already secured their spot in the quarterfinals, the situation is more precarious for East Bengal. They are currently second in Group A with seven points from three matches.
According to the Durand Cup 2024 format, the top team from each of the six groups qualifies directly for the quarterfinals, along with two of the best second-placed teams across all groups.
East Bengal currently stands second among the best second-placed teams, but their quarterfinal hopes hinge on the outcome of the match between Goa and Shillong Lajong.
If either of those teams wins, they will surpass East Bengal, leaving the Red-and-Gold Brigade's fate uncertain.
