Exclusive| WFI Chief Sanjay Singh Hopeful Despite Slim Chances Of Overturning Vinesh Phogat's Disqualification

In an exclusive telephonic conversation with OneIndia, Sanjay Singh, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, expressed his disappointment over Vinesh Phogat's disqualification due to being overweight. He mentioned that the Indian federation plans to appeal against this decision at the highest level, as Vinesh was very close to securing a gold medal.

Singh revealed that WFI has already written to United World Wrestling (UWW) and the organising committee but has yet to receive a response. He added, "We are going to meet UWW president." Despite the low chances of success, Singh emphasised their determination to keep trying.

Supporting Staff Blamed

The WFI chief pointed fingers at the supporting staff for the mishap. He stated that the staff sent by the Government of India and those chosen by Vinesh herself were responsible for her condition. This incident has raised questions about the efficiency and accountability of the support team.

Singh assured that Vinesh Phogat is now fine and not suffering from dehydration. However, he admitted he hasn't spoken to her yet because she is too upset and not ready to talk. The emotional toll on Vinesh is evident, reflecting her disappointment over missing out on a significant opportunity.

Political Interference in Sports

Sanjay Singh also highlighted a broader issue affecting Indian sports. He remarked that there is more emphasis on politics than on sports in India. This statement underscores the challenges athletes face beyond their physical training and performance.

The WFI remains hopeful despite the slim chances of overturning Vinesh's disqualification. They plan to continue their efforts by engaging with key organisations like UWW, IOC, and the organising committee. Singh's commitment reflects their dedication to seeking justice for Vinesh.

This incident has sparked discussions about improving support systems for athletes and reducing political interference in sports administration. Ensuring athletes receive proper guidance and support is crucial for their success on international platforms.

The wrestling community stands by Vinesh Phogat during this challenging time. Her near miss at winning gold highlights both her potential and the need for better management practices within Indian sports federations.
