England Triumphs Over Switzerland in Penalties, Secures Euro 2024 Semifinal Spot
England has added another chapter to its complex history with penalty shootouts. Three years after losing the European Championship final on penalties, England's players exuded confidence as they defeated Switzerland in a shootout to reach the semifinals of Euro 2024. Trent Alexander-Arnold secured the win by blasting the ball into the top corner, leading England to a 5-3 shootout victory following a 1-1 draw in extra time on Saturday.

"The team showed a lot of character, a lot of belief, heart and spirit out there," Alexander-Arnold told the BBC. "We knew it was going to be tight but whatever it takes, no matter what, we win and that's all that matters."
England's Penalty Success
Bukayo Saka, who had missed a crucial penalty in the 2021 final and faced racial abuse afterward, also scored in the shootout. The 22-year-old had earlier equalised to send the game into extra time. Other successful penalty takers included Cole Palmer and Jude Bellingham, aged 22 and 21 respectively, along with Ivan Toney, who returned from an eight-month ban for breaching betting rules.
England took the lead in the shootout after goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved Manuel Akanji's first penalty for Switzerland. This victory marks England's third shootout win out of four under manager Gareth Southgate's eight-year tenure. Southgate himself is no stranger to shootout heartbreak, having missed a crucial penalty in the 1996 European Championship semifinal against Germany.
Southgate's Leadership
Southgate has led England to at least the semifinals in three of the four major tournaments during his time as manager. Reflecting on this achievement, he said, "We've never been to a final outside of England, we've never won a Euros. So there's two bits of history we'd like to create."
The quarterfinal match went into extra time after Saka scored off the post in the 80th minute, cancelling out Breel Embolo's goal for Switzerland five minutes earlier. This was England's first shot on target in an otherwise cautious performance from the 2021 runner-up.
Switzerland's Exit
Switzerland exits the European Championship on penalties in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive time, having lost to Spain three years ago. "I'm really sad for the players," coach Murat Yakin said.
The Swiss had better chances to win in extra time, including Xherdan Shaqiri hitting the frame of the goal directly from a corner and Zeki Amdouni forcing a save from Pickford in the 119th minute. Despite these efforts, Switzerland could not secure a victory.
Challenges and Criticism
England was without captain Harry Kane for the shootout after he collided with Southgate on the touchline and appeared injured. He was replaced by Toney due to cramp, according to Southgate.
The team's cautious tactics have drawn criticism from fans, some of whom threw plastic cups at Southgate after a goalless group stage draw with Slovenia. "When it's as personal as it's been in the last few weeks, on a human level it's quite difficult," Southgate said on Saturday while defending England's "streetwise" approach to winning games.
England will face Turkey or the Netherlands in Dortmund on Wednesday for a spot in the final. This will be another opportunity for Southgate and his team to make history by reaching their first final outside of England and potentially winning their first European Championship.
This victory against Switzerland adds another significant moment to England's journey under Southgate's leadership. The team continues to show resilience and determination as they aim for further success in Euro 2024.
