Diana Taurasi Achieves Historic 6th Olympic Gold as US Defeats France

Diana Taurasi has made history in Olympic basketball. She is now the first player to win six gold medals. The 42-year-old American was part of the U.S. women's team that narrowly defeated France 67-66 on Sunday. This victory marked Taurasi's sixth gold medal, surpassing her longtime teammate Sue Bird for the most in Olympic basketball history.

Taurasi Wins 6th Olympic Gold

Unlike her previous five Olympics, Taurasi did not play a significant role on the court this time. She didn't participate in the title game, but her presence off the court was invaluable. The U.S. team has now won 61 consecutive Olympic games, a streak dating back to the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Breanna Stewart Praises Taurasi's Contribution

Breanna Stewart highlighted Taurasi's immense impact on USA Basketball. "We talk about that gold standard and she is that," Stewart said. "How many wins has she had of the 60? I don't know, off the top of my head. But she continues to kind of come in and show up and be the GOAT that she is and whether it's in different roles like when she first started or to now, she's one of the best to ever play."

Stewart added that sharing the court with Taurasi has been a privilege for all team members. "I think for all of us, we're just happy to share the court with her and we'll make sure that we go out and get this done for her," she said.

Coach Cheryl Reeve's Insights

U.S. coach Cheryl Reeve discussed Taurasi's evolving role on the team. She praised how Taurasi, the WNBA's all-time leading scorer, has adapted to a reduced role while still contributing significantly. "She's ran the gamut. And, you know, in her final Olympics, the mark that she's making in terms of leadership and just sharing the knowledge that she has," Reeve said.

Reeve also acknowledged Taurasi's competitive spirit and lasting legacy in USA Basketball. "I don't know that there's a greater competitor for USA basketball. I mean, there's been some tremendous ones. There's sort of a Mount Rushmore," she added.

After securing their latest Olympic title, Taurasi celebrated with numerous hugs, including one with Bird who watched from the opposite sideline in street clothes. During the medal ceremony, Taurasi stood with her hand over her heart as the national anthem played.

The celebration continued with more photos, capturing Taurasi with her newest gold medal addition. Her contributions to USA Basketball have cemented her status as one of the greatest players in Olympic history.

Taurasi's experience and leadership have been crucial for the U.S. team throughout their winning streak. Her ability to adapt and support her teammates off the court has been as valuable as her on-court performances in previous Olympics.

The U.S. women's basketball team's achievement of eight consecutive gold medals underscores their dominance in the sport. Taurasi's six gold medals are a testament to her enduring excellence and commitment to USA Basketball.

This milestone not only highlights Taurasi's individual accomplishments but also reflects the strength and unity of the U.S. women's basketball program over decades.
