Delhi Bus Fires: Short-Circuits Cause 30 Buses to Burn in 8 Years
Delhi has faced a spate of bus fires in recent years, with 30 incidents recorded in the past eight years. Short-circuits have been identified as the main culprit, particularly affecting older buses. The Delhi government shared these concerning statistics with the Assembly on Monday.
In the past eight years, Delhi has witnessed a series of bus fires, raising concerns about the safety of public transportation in the city. According to data provided by the Delhi government, a total of 30 buses have caught fire during this period, with four incidents occurring in the current year alone.
Short-Circuits: A Major Cause
An analysis of the fire incidents reveals that short-circuits are the most common cause, accounting for a significant number of the cases. The data indicates that buses that are around 12 years old are particularly vulnerable to these incidents. This highlights the need for regular maintenance and timely replacement of aging vehicles to prevent potential hazards.
Other Contributing Factors
In addition to short-circuits, other factors such as engine overheating and drivers flagging technical issues that go unaddressed have also been identified as contributing to bus fires. Poor maintenance by service providers has also been cited as a reason in some cases, underscoring the importance of stringent quality control measures.
Phasing Out Old Buses
Recognizing the need to address these issues, the Delhi government is taking steps to phase out old buses and replace them with electric vehicles. Recently, 500 electric buses were added to the city's fleet, bringing the total number of such buses to 1,300. The government aims to have 80% of the bus fleet electrified by 2025, which will not only reduce the risk of fire incidents but also contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation system.
The bus fire incidents in Delhi highlight the importance of prioritizing public transportation safety. By addressing the root causes of these incidents, such as short-circuits and poor maintenance, and transitioning to a more modern and eco-friendly fleet, the Delhi government is working towards ensuring the safety and reliability of public transportation for its citizens.
