This Is Why Ben Stokes Opted Not To Play IPL 2025

Ben Stokes has decided to skip the IPL auction to focus on extending his career with England. He previously played for teams like Rising Pune Supergiant, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. In 2017, he was named the tournament's most valuable player. Under rules, if a player withdraws being acquired, they can't participate in the next two seasons unless it's for valid.

"(There is) just so much cricket. There's no hiding behind the fact that I'm at the back-end of my career. I obviously want to play as long as I possibly can. Looking after my body and looking after myself as much as I can is key to that." Stokes explained his decision to BBC Sport before England's Test series against New Zealand in Christchurch.

Focus on Longevity

Stokes emphasised prioritising games to prolong his career. He mentioned playing in South Africa this year and making decisions that would allow him to wear the England shirt for as long as possible. His focus remains on maintaining his physical health to continue playing at a high level.

England has introduced Jacob Bethell, a left-handed batsman, who will debut at number three in their upcoming match. The team currently ranks sixth in the World Test Championship points table and is out of contention for next year's final at Lord's.

Adapting to Conditions

Stokes commented on the pitch conditions in New Zealand: "If you saw that pitch in England, you'd be praying to God that you won the toss and could bowl first." He noted how pitches in New Zealand can play differently than they appear, highlighting the need for adaptability during matches.

The World Test Championship format seems perplexing to Stokes. He stated he doesn't focus on it much but believes consistent good performance over time naturally leads teams into finals contention. For him and his team, it's about taking each game and series as it comes.

"For me and this team it's about taking it game by game, series by series, and if you end up finding yourself in the position where you happen to be in the final, then it's great," said Stokes.
