T20 World Cup 2024: Suspense Continues Over Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's Participation; Here's What BCCI Says

Ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup, slated for June 2024, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is leaving no stone unturned. The cricket body has asked all its men to pull up their socks and get ready for the prestigious tournament. Trying to convince senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have been away from the shorter format since 2022, the cricket body is in constant touch with both. According to a report published by Sports Tak, the selectors have cleared Rohit Sharma that if he plays, then he will lead the side.

The Report suggests Rohit Sharma may miss the three-match T20 series against Afghanistan, starting January 11.

Sports Tak quoted a BCCI source stating, "We have informed Rohit that if he plays he will lead the team, and you will be there in the squad, so he (Rohit) and the coach needs to take care of it. I don't see him play Afghanistan T20 as well but let's wait and see how things develop."

Virat Kohli, the highest run-getter for Team India in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, is yet to confirm his availability for the shorter format world tournament. The selectors will soon meet Virat Kohli to discuss the importance of his participation and will try to convince him for the World Cup.

"As of now it looks very difficult for him to make the cut but the management will speak to him and then a final call will be taken as the management doesn't want to jump the gun, which is why a meeting with him is important before reaching any conclusion on his T20 format and World Cup slot," as quoted by Sports Tak.

Virat holds a phenomenal record in T20Is, scoring 4008 runs in only 115 matches with a massive strike rate of 137.96. The cricketer has scored a ton and 37 half-centuries with a superb average of 52.73 runs.
