Sunil Gavaskar kept a light promise in style as Jemimah Rodrigues received a bat-shaped guitar and a live jam. The former India men's captain sang alongside the young India and Delhi Capitals batter. The moment spread fast online, linking Rodrigues’ new leadership role with a nostalgic cricket-meets-music celebration.

Their duet featured the evergreen track Yeh Dosti from the film Sholay, originally sung by Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey. Fans watched Gavaskar and Rodrigues sing together while sharing easy jokes. The clip highlighted how senior Indian cricket names continue to connect with current stars in relaxed, informal ways away from match pressure.

Jemimah Rodrigues captaincy and Delhi Capitals challenge

Earlier, attention around Jemimah Rodrigues had centred on captaincy duties with Delhi Capitals in the Women's Premier League. Former India captain Anjum Chopra spoke about the change before the season began in Navi Mumbai on Friday. For Anjum, Rodrigues now has a chance to stretch skills beyond batting and fielding, into long-term leadership.

Rodrigues steps up after serving as vice-captain under Australia’s multiple-time World Cup-winning leader Meg Lanning. Delhi Capitals finished runners-up in all three previous WPL editions, in 2023, 2024 and 2025. With Lanning now captain of UP Warriorz, the franchise placed faith in Rodrigues to turn close finishes into trophies.

"See, expectations will be there with the franchise also. But for me, it's about when you entrust a player with a role, they start understanding themselves in a different light altogether. So, she's captained Mumbai and been there at the helm. But now leading a franchise team is a different ballgame altogether. Now she will also explore another side of herself, not only as a batter or a fielder, but also as a captain," Anjum told IANS in an exclusive conversation on the eve of the competition's commencement.

Anjum pointed out that captaincy stretches into every area of a cricketer’s routine. "Captaincy does not happen only on the ground; it happens off the ground as well. So, you learn more about yourself, like how you're handling yourself in a situation, what you could do, and what you've done better in various manners in which you think as a batter, and a fielder, trying to be ahead of the competition, and sometimes winning a battle or not winning a battle."

Anjum added that Rodrigues must now guide both seasoned internationals and emerging Indian names in Delhi Capitals. "So, I feel it's going to be a nice growth for Jemimah Rodrigues as a cricketer because now she will be handling players like Marizanne Kapp in the lineup, who are already established cricketers, and also players who share the dressing room with her, like Shafali Verma, and Niki Prasad, who is coming through the ranks very quickly. So, it's always a nice responsibility, but what a player makes of it, and how they travel that part of the journey, is what matters," she added.

While that leadership test unfolds in the WPL, Gavaskar’s gesture gave Rodrigues a lighter moment. In the viral video, Gavaskar greeted Rodrigues warmly before presenting the customised guitar. The instrument looked like a cricket bat but carried full guitar detailing. Gavaskar joked that he was not the "opening bat" on that day, drawing laughs.

The bat-guitar exchange fulfilled an earlier World Cup-themed promise from Gavaskar to Rodrigues. He had said there would be a jam session if Rodrigues lifted the Women's ODI World Cup. That condition has now been met, so the pair sang with easy chemistry. Fans shared the clip widely across platforms once it appeared.

Rodrigues later posted about the meeting on Instagram and stressed how much it meant personally. "Sunil sir kept his promise and we ended up jamming with the coolest Bat-ar ever. This was a special one," Jemimah posted on Instagram.
