SRH And MI IPL Players To Wear Black Armbands In Grief Of Pahalgam Attack
In a heartfelt show of solidarity, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to honor the victims of the recent Pahalgam terror attack the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match. This tribute will take place during the clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians on April 23 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The sorrowful event, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives, including that of two foreigners, has deeply affected the nation.
To commemorate those lost in this tragic event, both players and umpires will adorn black armbands and observe a minute of silence prior to the start of the game. This gesture is part of a broader move to exhibit respect and mourning, with the absence of cheerleaders from the field further reflecting the somber mood. This decision by the BCCI underscores the cricket community's collective grief and respect for the lives lost.

The BCCI's gesture is not an isolated incident of compassion and solidarity in the face of terrorism. Following the Pulwama attack in 2019, the cricketing body opted to cancel the IPL's 12th season's opening ceremony, choosing instead to allocate the funds to the families of the attack's victims. Additionally, in a tribute to the Indian army, the national cricket team donned camouflage caps during a match against Australia in March 2019. MS Dhoni also made headlines that year for wearing gloves featuring the Army Insignia during the ODI World Cup, though he later discontinued this after the ICC intervened.
The reaction to the Pahalgam attack has seen a unified front from the global leadership condemning the violence and from the Indian cricket community expressing their condolences. Prominent cricket figures like Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill have taken to social media to denounce the attack and extend their support to the victims' families, illustrating the strong ties of fraternity and national solidarity within the sport.
This approach by the BCCI, along with the actions taken by Indian cricketers in the past, highlights the sporting community's commitment to standing with the nation during times of hardship. These gestures of remembrance and solidarity serve as a powerful reminder of the impact of sports beyond the playing field, fostering a sense of unity and compassion amidst tragedy.
