Shubman Gill's Elevation As Test Captain Not Surprising, Challenge Will Be Holding Team Together
Shubman Gill being named as captain of the Indian Test team is no surprise at all. He had been touted as the next captain for quite some time now. The writing was on the wall ever since the selectors conveyed to Rohit Sharma that he would no longer be leading the Test side and that a younger captain would take the reins. As expected, that transition has now materialised with Gill stepping into the role.
For those who believe the dust has settled with Gill being named Test captain, it's important to recognise the broader context. This is a relatively inexperienced side compared to teams from recent tours.

Apart from seasoned names like Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja, the rest of the squad lacks significant Test experience. The leadership transition may be complete, but the real challenge lies ahead - building a cohesive unit capable of competing consistently at the highest level, especially in challenging overseas conditions.
Inconsistency With Bat - A Challenge For Captain Shubman Gill
It's also worth noting that Gill was dropped from the playing XI just two Test matches ago - a reminder that his position in the side hasn't been entirely secure. Ironically, the last time India won a Test match, Gill was sidelined due to injury. This raises valid questions: can he address his batting inconsistencies while shouldering the additional burden of captaincy?
Amid these concerns, there's growing chatter that head coach Gautam Gambhir will play a dominant role from behind the scenes, effectively "running the show" from the dressing room. While his presence could bring structure and aggression to a young side, it also opens up questions of its own.
Coach Gautam Gambhir To Run The Show?
Gambhir's personal record in England - where Team India face some of their toughest tests - was underwhelming as a player. Will he succeed in a coaching role where he once struggled on the field?
The dynamics between an inexperienced captain and a high-profile, no-nonsense coach like Gambhir could define the future of this Test side. Whether it leads to a revival or further instability remains to be seen.
Will Virat Kohli Be Missed?
But perhaps the most intriguing element of this upcoming Test series is the absence of Virat Kohli from the dressing room - and that too after several years. His presence, even without the captaincy, always had a significant psychological and strategic impact on the opponent teams.
The energy, intensity, and sheer stature he brings can uplift the group, especially in high-pressure situations. Since Kohli is retired from Test cricket and isn't there, the rest of the squad would have to manage on their own.
If this team can absorb the initial blow from England - a side known for its aggressive "Bazball" approach - there's every chance we could witness some truly thrilling moments throughout the series. Let's not forget, India pulled off a historic series win in Australia in 2020-21 without a star like Kohli. So why should winning in England be out of reach for this team?
With Gill stepping into leadership, Gambhir's influence from the dugout, and the experience of senior players like Bumrah, Rahul, Jadeja, and Pant - this may well be the start of a new chapter for Indian Test cricket. A chapter with a young team with less experience!
