Shubman Gill's First Reaction After Becoming India Test Captain
Shubman Gill has been appointed as the 37th captain of India's Test cricket team. This opportunity arose following Rohit Sharma's retirement earlier this month. Thanking BCCI and selectors for the new role, Shubman Gill expressed his excitement and sense of duty in a video shared on the Indian cricket team's Instagram account. He acknowledged that leading the Test team is a "big responsibility" and feels honoured to have achieved this milestone.
Gill, aged 25, will lead India in a five-match series against England starting June 20. This will be his first assignment as Test captain. Despite not having led in Tests before, he has experience captaining India in T20Is and serves as vice-captain in limited-overs formats.

Shubman Gill's Journey to Captaincy
Reflecting on his journey, Gill mentioned that playing Test cricket for India was a childhood dream. "As a young kid, when anyone starts playing cricket, they want to play for India," he said. "Not just play for India, but play Test cricket for India for a very long time." His appointment marks him as the fifth youngest Test captain for India.
The upcoming series will see Gill leading an inexperienced squad without veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. All three have recently retired from red-ball cricket, leaving a gap in leadership and experience within the team.
Challenges Ahead for Shubman Gill
Ajit Agarkar, chairman of selectors, acknowledged the challenges ahead for Gill. "At the moment, from what we're looking...be it franchise cricket, you can see that he's relishing the role," Agarkar stated. He noted that international cricket presents tougher challenges but expressed confidence in Gill's abilities.
Agarkar also highlighted the transition phase due to key retirements but remained optimistic about Gill's potential to lead effectively. "It's a big job; it's a big transition," he said. "Two of your big players are retiring. But we're all confident that he's the guy to take us forward."
The selectors believe that despite the absence of seasoned players like Rohit and Kohli, Gill can steer the team successfully through this transitional period. They are hopeful that his leadership will prove beneficial over time.
