India's ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer was hospitalized in Sydney after sustaining a rib cage injury and internal bleeding during the third ODI against Australia while fielding, requiring immediate admission to the ICU. He will remain under observation for one to seven days depending on recovery, with doctors monitoring his condition before deciding when he can resume training.

Injury During Fielding Effort

The injury happened as Iyer made a brilliant backward-running catch at point to dismiss Alex Carey. Although the catch was successful, the cricketer appeared to injure his left rib cage in the process. He was taken to the hospital shortly after returning to the dressing room on Saturday, as his condition worsened.

"Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately.

"He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop spreading of infection due to bleeding," a source privy to the development told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Medical Team Took Immediate Action

The BCCI medical staff reportedly reacted quickly when Iyer's vital signs began to fluctuate after the match. The doctors and physiotherapist accompanying the team decided not to take any chances and arranged his hospitalization right away.

"The team doctor and physio didn't take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He's a tough lad and should be fine soon," the source added.

Recovery Timeline Remains Uncertain

Initially, Iyer was expected to be sidelined for about three weeks, but the discovery of internal bleeding has extended his recovery period. Doctors are closely monitoring his condition before deciding when he can resume training.

"Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it's difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket," the source said.

The 31-year-old is expected to remain under medical supervision in Sydney for at least a week before being cleared to fly back to India. He is not part of India's T20 squad, allowing him additional time to focus on complete recovery.
