Sarfaraz Khan To Lose Spot As KL Rahul Is Set For Return Vs Bangladesh In First Test

Sarfaraz Khan's fearless play against England in the home series left a mark, but KL Rahul's experience might secure his spot in India's Test XI for the series against Bangladesh starting September 19 in Chennai. The team management and selection committee are focusing on the upcoming tour of Australia in November-December, where Rahul's 50-Test experience is seen as an advantage.

Rahul's recent performances include a century in South Africa and an 86 at Hyderabad before his injury. A BCCI source mentioned, "He was not dropped but got injured. So, he is fit and available, scored a fifty in Duleep, got match time and he will start." This statement highlights Rahul's readiness to return to the playing XI.

Focus on Experience

The choice between Sarfaraz's youthful exuberance and Rahul's seasoned presence is crucial for the team management. Sarfaraz had an impressive debut with twin half-centuries against England at Rajkot and another fifty at Dharamsala. His precise footwork and improvisation have been noteworthy.

However, Rahul's knack for scoring at significant overseas venues like Sydney, Lord's, Oval, and Centurion gives him an edge. Despite an average of less than 35 after 50 Tests, his range of strokes when in form keeps him ahead of Sarfaraz. The team management values this experience as they prepare for Australia.

Competition Among Spinners

The third spinner's slot sees competition between Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. In the recent Duleep Trophy first round, Axar took three wickets and scored 86 on a green top at Anantapur. In contrast, Kuldeep struggled to trouble Musheer Khan and Navdeep Saini but has had success against Bangladesh in the past.

Kuldeep's variations make him a better option on good batting tracks compared to Axar. The team management will consider these factors when finalising the playing XI for the Bangladesh series.

The same principle of continuity applies to Rishabh Pant versus Dhruv Jurel. Jurel showed promise in the England series but Pant's exceptional Test record means Jurel will have to wait for his opportunity.

Rahul missed two previous Test tours of Australia due to injuries but scored a century in Sydney during the 2014 tour. His experience is seen as irreplaceable by the team management, who are not just looking at Bangladesh but also planning ahead for Australia.

A BCCI source added about Sarfaraz, "Sarfaraz has done everything right and mind it, if there is an injury anywhere, he will just walk in but Rahul's experience is irreplaceable." This underscores how close Sarfaraz is to breaking into the XI if any opportunity arises.

In summary, while Sarfaraz Khan has shown great potential and skill, KL Rahul's extensive experience makes him a preferred choice for India's Test series against Bangladesh and beyond. The competition among spinners remains tight with both Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel vying for a spot based on their recent performances.
