India's cricketing hero, Rohit Sharma, awoke the morning after clinching victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 to a heartening sight: the prestigious trophy resting beside him in his Barbados hotel room.

Following India's thrilling triumph over South Africa in a tightly contested final, where they sealed the win by a slender margin of 7 runs, Sharma took centre stage in a press conference with a momentous announcement.

Rohit Sharma Bids Farewell to T20Is

He gracefully bowed out of T20 international cricket, following in the footsteps of his esteemed predecessor, Virat Kohli. Reflecting on his decision, Sharma expressed profound gratitude for his T20I journey, which began auspiciously with India's inaugural T20 World Cup win back in 2007.

Despite journalists' urging for him to continue, he asserted that there could be no better moment to bid farewell to the format that had defined a significant part of his illustrious career. Notably, Sharma clarified his unwavering commitment to continue representing India in ODIs and Tests, reassuring fans that his retirement was solely from T20 internationals.

The victory over South Africa not only marked a historic achievement for Sharma and Kohli, who celebrated their first joint triumph in an ICC World Cup for India but also signalled the end of a series of disappointments in recent major tournaments. These included heartbreaks such as semifinal exits in the 2022 T20 World Cup and losses in the World Test Championship and the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Rohit Sharma bid adieu to his T20I career as the highest run-scorer in the history of the format, amassing an impressive tally of 4231 runs, which included five centuries and 32 half-centuries, at a striking rate of 140. His legacy in Indian cricket is underscored by his transformative role in shaping the team's T20 strategy.

In the T20 World Cup 2024, Sharma's aggressive batting and exemplary leadership were pivotal in guiding India to victory. His standout performance, totalling 257 runs in 8 matches at a blistering strike rate of 156.70, epitomized his impact and influence on the team's success.
