PCB Sets Three Conditions Before ICC To Play India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026 Clash

The deadlock between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) over the high-profile T20 World Cup clash between India and Pakistan appears to be inching toward resolution.

A final decision is expected soon after top ICC officials travelled to Pakistan for direct discussions with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who outlined several conditions for ending the boycott threat.

ICC Delegation Meets PCB Amid Boycott Threat

A two-member ICC delegation, consisting of deputy chairman Imran Khawaja and associate members' representative Mubashir Usmani, arrived in Pakistan on Sunday to hold talks with Naqvi regarding Pakistan's refusal to play India on February 15 at Colombo's Premadasa Stadium.

The standoff began on February 1, just two weeks before the tournament, when the Government of Pakistan declared that its men's team would not take the field against India. The move was intended as a gesture of solidarity with Bangladesh, who had been eliminated from the competition after declining to travel to India.

The emergency meeting in Lahore also saw Bangladesh Cricket Board president Aminul Islam in attendance. Reports suggest that while Pakistan may soften its position, it has attached specific demands to any reversal.

PCB Pushes For Funding Boost And Cricketing Etiquette

Beyond seeking a larger share of ICC revenue, Naqvi urged the global body to facilitate the resumption of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan. He also referenced the Asia Cup controversy involving players not shaking hands, stressing the importance of maintaining sporting values.

"During the meeting PCB chairman presented before ICC a few conditions including increase in Pakistan's annual funding, India reviving bilateral series and their players shake hands in an India-Pakistan match," the publication quoted a source as saying.

Bangladesh Seeks Compensation And Hosting Rights

Bangladesh used the opportunity to present its own requests to the ICC. The board has asked for financial compensation and the chance to host a major global tournament.

"Bangladesh, too, has demanded monetary compensation from the ICC and one global event, maybe the next Under-19 World Cup in 2028," the source further read.

According to the report, ICC representatives assured both boards that their demands would be placed before the ICC Board for consideration.

Final Decision Hinges On Pakistan PM

Despite ongoing negotiations, the ultimate call on whether Pakistan will play India rests with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, since the original boycott announcement came from the Pakistani government.

Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan's Interior Minister, is expected to meet Sharif within the next 24 to 28 hours. A definitive outcome on the matter could therefore emerge in the coming days.

Earlier, Sri Lanka Cricket had written to the PCB urging it to rethink the decision, reminding Pakistan of the support extended in the past and expressing hope for reciprocity now.
