While chasing a target of 172 runs, the New Zealand openers, Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, started the innings impressively.

However, the Black Caps encountered a setback, losing five wickets rapidly. Nevertheless, by the 23.2nd over, New Zealand sealed victory against Sri Lanka by five wickets, with 160 balls remaining.

Earlier, Trent Boult rediscovered his magic with the new ball and Mitchell Santner skilfully exploited the slight grip on offer as New Zealand bundled out Sri Lanka for 171 in their crucial World Cup match here on Thursday.

Having logged eight points, the Kiwis need to win their last league match against the Lankans to stay alive in the race to join India, South Africa and Australia in the semifinals.

Accordingly, they produced a forceful effort through left-arm pacer Boult (3/37) and left-arm spinner Santner (2/22) after electing to field.

On the other hand, the Pakistan team is facing an imminent elimination from the ICC World Cup 2023 following Kane Williamson's New Zealand dominating Sri Lanka.

Pakistan will now take on England on Saturday in their last league of the tournament. With New Zealand beating the Lankan side easily, Pakistan has to now defeat the English team by at least 287 runs or chase the target in just 2.5 overs.

It now looks like the Kiwis will take on India on November 15 in the first semi-final.

This also triggered meme fest on social media where netizens trolled Pakistan side as it is virtually out of the World Cup.
